OMG my bf and i went and picked out my e-ring acoupe of weeks ago. So we got it resized and diamond set in setting, etc. and picked it up and paid in full about a week and a half ago. Anyway so he hasn't "technically proposed'' yet so i haven't been wearing it and have only seen it a couple of times. Anyway i came home from work this afternoon and took it out of its box to admire. While looking at it in the sunlight i noticed shock horror there is a noticable scratch on the top of the diamond. I never noticed it before but then again i ever looked at in the sunlight before!! I am freaking out!!

Because we have paid for it in full will they let us return/exchange and since we customised the design and they specially made for me how can you return that? how does a diamond get scratched anyway, did they sell us a scratched diamond and not tell us?? Will they say i should have checked before we purchased- buyer beware :cursing: ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i'm so mad / sad:crybaby: everytime i look now all i see is an ugly mark.We are going overseas on christmas day so it doesn't really give us much time to return and look for other rings. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Oh holy moly...... my hearts borken for you babes. Did you try wiping it or giving it a rinse w/some soap and water. One time i thought my ring had a scratch on the surface of the diamond and i was almost going in panic mode until i decided that maybe it was something dirty. So, i put it in my sonic cleaner for a few minutes, too it out, gave the thing a scratch, and it went away. Phheeewww. In your case, i hope that happens too.

I think you should call them to have your question answered weather or not they will do a refund/exchange if it so happens to be a flaw. I think if this place was reputable, you'd be happy to find that most places give you a guarantee period that you probably didn't even know about. My well-wishings are sent to you.

Goodness.. this is bad... Call the place you had it set and tell them about the scratch, and even take it back to them and demand a refund. Diamonds do not scratch that easy, they need to be scratched with another diamond.

I wish everything works out babe!

Hi,
It sounds like it is thier fault, they shoudent have given you the ring in this sate they must have known there is a scratch on the diamond.Ask them to look at it again because there is no way a diamond can be damage on its own other than there workshops.

I'm sure it would make my heart sink to find a scratch on my diamond. Were you storing it in a ring box by itself?

I know I try to be careful in keeping jewelry from clanking together.

I agree that you should try cleaning it and then call the store. Have you looked at it in sunlight before or was this the first time?

Is it a flaw or a scratch? If you (gently) run your finger over the area, does it catch? If it's smooth then it's either a flaw or dirt. Good luck and pls keep us posted!

if its truly a scratch. how did you not notice.. inspect closely before leaving the store..?

The store is probably going to say/think you did it.. if you did not notice upon inspection and leaving the store.

i am really sorry if this happened.

It is pretty hard to scratch a diamond - gawd the amount of times I have whacked my ring on metal is ridiculous.

If you have a certificate you should have the mapping of your stone - this could shed some light on what you are seeing.

Also - once I thought I saw a flaw in my new stone, only to embaressingly realize I was just viewing a facet of the stone - IDK if that made sense, basically I was viewing the cut through the cut - not a flaw - so perhaps, you are just viewing a facet and not an actual flaw.

Best to do what others advised and run a cotton ball or q-tip to see if it snags. Then check your mapping and/or head back to jeweler.

It seems reasonable that you can change your mind and ask to exchange the diamond for another. You won't encounter much resistance for that. Refund might be harder but you can still try.

I am always concerned about my diamond getting "switched out" when I have it serviced. It is possible this has happened to you. The scratch could also be a surface inclusion that you weren't aware of. In either case, because you had it serviced by the same place that very recently sold it to you, you have options that don't have to be nasty to proceed with.

For everyone's reference, make sure you always get a full appraisal that maps any inclusions (it is like a fingerprint of the diamond). Such as a GIA Certificate or similar. Make sure the serial number is noted on any repair ticket when it is being serviced. Make sure to confirm with the jeweler (under magnification) that this is indeed the diamond you are giving to them for service. When you get it back, you repeat the process to ensure it is the same diamond and it is in the same condition as when you gave it to them. This is how you protect yourself.

If you want to go the extra step, you can get your diamond laser engraved on the edge of the stone. GIA does this in the US and it becomes registered with them that you own that diamond. You can have anything put on it. I've had GIA serial numbers engraved as well as intials (JFK  JBK). This is the ultimate protection, along with the cert/appraisal, and can only be seen with a loop. It does not distort the appearance of a diamond.
