Hi diamond experts! I have a question that is boggling me about diamond cut... I always thought cut was graded (ideal, excellent, very good etc...). However some jewelers my boyfriend and I have visited acted like we were crazy when we asked about cut. One said it's just an "internet phenomenon" to have a cut rating. Can someone please explain?! It makes me very weary buying a diamond because I don't know who to trust out there :nogood:

Thank you!

It's real and it's not new. Cut quality has objective aspects such as light return and subjective qualities like facet pattern....there is a lot to it.
You can look at the GIA website and learn about diamond grading or do some research on PriceScope.
Don't be put off by a dismissive sales person.

I literally said "OH MY GOD" when I read that. "Internet phenomenon?" They need a wakeup call! Both the major labs have a system for grading cut, and have for MANY years, but AGS has the best one right now. ANY jeweler that tells you cut is not the most important factor is not worth a return trip to!

Cut is essential to the beauty of diamond, never go back to these so called jewellers...

The good news is there are a lot of knowledgeable and honest jewellers to choose from!

Thank you all for the kind responses! It reassures me that I'm not crazy haha! The jewelry store is called Baileys. I thought they would be legit because they carry higher end brands, including tacori and David yurman. I bet their diamonds are not GIA certified if they didn't know what cut gradings were. I will stop in and ask next time I am in the area because now I'm very curious.

They may know about it, but it almost sounds like they're hoping for/banking on less educated consumers and you "knew too much" for them to take advantage of.

OMG!!! I can't believe an actual jeweler would say that :nono: I am no expert and have only been researching diamonds for the last few weeks and even I can tell you the cut is the most important factor. Sorry you had such a bad experience. Diamond shopping is supposed to be fun.

Sadly, it seems the majority of consumers are uneducated on diamonds and that is reflected in the service/knowledge provided by jewellers. At one place I went to, the SA said that I was the first customer to ask her about cut - most others were only interested in the other 3Cs... mostly carat/colour.

This is what I just don't get about jewelers--- diamond cut is the *most* important of the 'C's', yet rarely, if ever, is it indicated on the tag or any other information pertaining to the diamond. It's like pulling teeth to try to get the info.
It's just never included in the advertised diamond specs-- I don't get it at all. *shakeshead*

I agree, it is very difficult to get that information! Every place we have visited, the carat, color and price were the only things printed on the tag. I am not sure if this is done in a deceiving way or if because the average consumer isn't education/doesn't care about cut. Even the little pamphlets the jewelers hand out ignore cut. I don't get it!! :thinkin:

Yes, that definitely sounds like it could be the case... she quoted "I have been in jewelry business for 22 years and I have never heard of that"... she cannot possibly be that naive. Sounds like she was trying to fool me haha
