Diamond and pearl studs can age you?

No rule fits all. I would disagree on many of the 'no-nos' from those stylists, some of the things they mention can prob be worn most successfully by the young and still look cute. Who else could get away with 'over-styled' hair and 'too much' make-up. Everyone should cultivate their own style.

Surely if someone is young enough to be aged by their 'huge' pearls/diamonds they are just going to look like they're wearing costume jewellery anyway. And the only thing an older woman has to worry about is security.

I absolutely love jewellery of every type but I will play the devil's advocate and say that large classic pieces worn at once can age someone once they hit that more grown up age of around thirty or so. A very safe classic look is aging in itself, or it can certainly look a little stuffy, safe or boring. Lol.
I love jewellery but now that am over forty *cough* I definitely am trying to edit the jewellery I wear any given day. I find a full set of classic fine jewellery can be a bit much and not very fashion forward (ultimately depending on the pieces and the occasion of course). Sometimes it feels younger, free-er and more interesting not to wear a full uniform of classic jewels. And that includes large diamonds and pearls. Also I do think diamonds can be a bit harsh on the not so young face, again depending on the occasion (And the face I suppose too). I guess that's why there was the rule about diamonds being for evening wear only.

I am not sure. I think child size pearls look strange on someone who does not have child size ears and big pearl earrings look like playing in Mom's jewelry case (over 9-10mm) on someone with smaller lobes. But again proportion would have to play a part. At a certain point the weight of an earring can wreck havoc on your piercing. I have 7mm pearl studs and I don't wear them often as I can feel the weight. Maybe that is what they are talking about the dropping stone factor?

Like that episode of Gordon Ramsey's kitchen nightmares with the Amy lady and her super large diamond studs.

If you wear a 12 mm 18" strand, it says "Look at me." Depending on what you wear it with, it can look like high end costume statement necklace, or a Ladies who Lunch staple. The clothing determines the meaning.

A 20" double 7 mm is "Jackie O." Personally, I think it is the most versatile piece of fine jewelry. It won't provoke comment no matter what you wear it with. But it is obviously expensive and conservative. It defaults to 25-45.

A vintage graduated strand is "grandma's favorite granddaughter." If you want to look sweet, innocent and family-values centric - it is fabulous. if you wear it alone, it will have a hint of childishness/old lady. This one is actually more aging than the big pearls.

I always agree with you, VL.

The double 8 mm is my staple strand. I wear it as one long strand, knotted, for a fun casual look.

A friend of mine rocks 12 mm earrings. She's 60 but has a pixie face. They look super cute on her.

The interesting thing is that historically, in Europe and the United States (and perhaps other places), diamonds were not considered appropriate for daytime wear. Contrast that with modern day attitudes - people enjoy their diamonds day or night now.

My personal opinion: life is short, wear what you like in the size you like and enjoy your jewelry!
