Designer bag collection - to curate or not?

I’ve tried so hard to curate my bags and keep then at 10 - 12 but I always fail..lol..I feel like giving up and just settle on 20 bags as my maximum limit. I currently have 18 in my collection, 3 of which are just added in 2023. Here’s the most recent pic of my collection:

A part of me wants to cull my collection and downsize them just to 10 but at the same time, I rationalise having all 18 of them because I use them for different purposes. Granted my Speedy 30 and Alma PM are on the backburner now but I don’t want to lose the “big bags” because I usually use them during winter. I might sell the Loewe rafia soon as I only used it less than 5 times.

My LV family

One can tell I love my Almas..hehe..at some point, I had 3 Alma BBs with Sunflower Epi and I loved that pop of color. Unfortunately, the glazing chipped after 6 months and i was offered either a repair or exchange for another bag. I took the opportunity to diversify my bag style so I exchanged for Neonoe BB.

The two Alma BBs and Neonoe are my usual office bags because they are very light and carry my daily essentials. I use backpack for work so I prefer light, handheld bags. I also love pairing my Alma indigo with denim jackets as it it elevates the outfit to smart casual.

The Alma PM and Speedy 30 are on a break because I have to carry my laptop bag everyday. I used to carry them a lot when i had my own desk and did not have to carry my laptop with me. I also keep them as they are my big bags and they are my earliest bags designer pieces from 2016 so I keep them for sentimental reasons as well.

My Chanel collection

I used to have a calfskin flap and CF medium flap in lambskin way back in 2016 but I sold them both last year as I was not using them much. I was so afraid to use the ML flap in lambskin and used it less than 30 times in 5 years I owned it. To this day, my greatest regret was not getting ML in caviar way back in 2016 when it was just over $6k.

I got the coco handle in iridiscent purple in March 2022 and the boy in medium caviar in August. Both from boutique and in caviar as I want to be carefree with my bags. The medallion tote is the very first bag I got preloved and it is in pristine condition, great structure, sturdy handles and no scuffed corners. I have resolved that moving forward, I will only ever buy Chanel preloved.

I love these Chanel pieces as they are versatile and classic. I will keep them in my collection till I’m old and gray..❤️

My YSL collection

The Mini Lou camera bag is my very first YSL bag and sparked my love for caviar/grained calfskin. It is my grab and go bag for running errands.

The Envelope bag is my go to bag for clubbing and parties. It’s such an elegant bag which can be easily worn crossbody and on the shoulder, very light and carefree.

My puffer bag I adore using, it’s the only lambskin in my collection. YSL’s lambskin just feels so soft yet hard wearing unlike Chanel’s.

My One of Each collection

The Lady Dior medium in grained calfskin leather is my latest addition to the family and I got it preloved for a bargain price at pristine condition as well. Huge bonus that it’s in hot pink that I’ve always wanted. I haven’t got the chance to use her but I love feeling her and looking at her. Attached COA.

My Gucci ophidia small shoulder bag was added last January and I bought her to have variety from my crossbody bags. I just wanted a small shoulder bag and this fits the bill perfectly.

The coach backpack is for walks and when I just feel like using a backpack. I’m satisfied with her and i’m
not planning any addition or replacement any time soon.

My Marc Jacobs bags

I love the small leather tote for office, very spacious for my needs but light and carefree. I have also designated it as my travel bag for its funtionality.

My canvas large tote bag is my gym bag and I will keep using her as such for years to come.

My Loewe bags

I use the mini puzzle bag for casual events and running errands. It carries all my essentials and it is a second in command to my YSL mini lou as grab and go bag.

The rafia shell bag I don’t use as much due to its opening and stiff material. I probably won’t get much when I sell it but that’s better than having it sit in my closet collecting dust.

This probably doesn’t help much but why get rid of any of them? I think you have a nice rounded collection. You could limit yourself to more bags and go by the one in one out rule when you do buy another bag. You have good taste. Those are all lovely bags.

Thank you so much for your inputs, hun..yeah, I’ve tried in vain to curate my collection so maybe i’ll just have to be at peace that I can never bring them down to 10 at max. I do use them as much as I could and it’s great to have options depending on my outfit for the day.

I wouldn’t. Why force yourself to downsize that significantly when it appears you really don’t want to? Unless you are in need financially, I don’t see the purpose in forcing yourself to get rid of things you still admire. Seems like an artificial barrier you are putting on yourself.

Thanks, lovely! Sometimes I watch minimalist videos on youtube and I get the urge to cull my collections..haha.. But I guess, it’s time to just accept the fact that I love having these bag options and I love looking at them from time to time..Acceptance is key..

You’re right, i’ll only ever consider selling when i’m strapped for cash or when they don’t spark joy anymore. It’s better for me to keep these and just be intentional in my purchases moving forward as I have a well rounded collection already.

I am currently in the same dilemma. I promised i would not go over 30, but have bought 6 bags in the last 2 months (pre loved Chanel Hamptons bag, Telfar to use as a laptop bag, holy grail-finally found an authentic one at a decent price-Prada Fairy bag, Fendi Sunshine Tote in grey, Hermes Her Bag 31 and Goyard Belle Chasse in yellow.) So now I feel like i need to sell 6 to compensate.

I have a Gucci Raja that i love the look of, but hate how narrow it is so that will go. A Burberry Maidstone that i don't reach for anymore will also go. After those 2 I am stuck with what to get rid off...it almost hurts my heart but i know this many is not practical and i literally do not have the space. Thinking about putting my Louboutin Paloma on the chopping block, but it's so beautiful i am waffling! Also considering getting rid of the LV Artsy in damier azur - i really like the bag but hate having the same bag as everyone else.

Let us know what you decide...maybe you can inspire me to clean things out LOL!

I would personally settle on 20, then you can have the 2 on your wishlist..

All of your bags are lovely, I couldn’t choose 10 of those..

My collection used to be 15 with a wishlist, but I sold 2, gifted some..

Atm I have a wishlist of about 6, but only have 9 left so even with the wishlist would have 15..

I’m not Planning to get rid of more, although my Niece’s birthday is in June and I’ll probably gift her a bag, but then no more out for another year until she turns 21( I don’t Think).., but I AM hoping to buy everything on my wishlist eventually..

Your collection isn’t excessive by PF standards..I found myself using the same bag everyday, I’ve just started rotating whivh is more fun, now I’m trying to choose a bag to gift my niece..we have very different styles(she’s only 19), but quite Mumsy like my sister lol…if she’s Very adorable she Might get my Tsako as it’s like a Hobo bag which is more Her than my less expensive contemporary designer modern bags..

Ditto, sounds like you’ve added some amazing bags, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to get rid of the same number!
I’d thought 1 out , 1 in..I sold 2 quite quickly , gifted several quite close together, I’m getting a new one for my birthday in April, and shopping in June for another, but can’t afford all of my wishlist all at once, otherwise I’d have 15 now anyway..

Carpe Diem Seize the moment!
If you’re lucky enough to find the right bags just be grateful, when it’s time to part with them you’ll know, better that than regret it..unless you literally have hundreds and hundreds which is ridiculous , you’re not harming yourself or anybody else..the new bags sound great!

Enjoy your collection and don’t be hard on yourself (advice given to me by another PF friend!)

Thanks hun! Your niece is very lucky to be gifted with one of your bags. I have also gifted around 15 of my bags to my sisters and nieces but those are just contemporary brands. Maybe someday, I can give them the luxury ones when they get older, say 25 yo..

Maybe i was just hanging with the wrong crowd..lol.. I don’t think I’m ready to be minimalist any time soon, not when it comes to bags anyway..
