Here the pics I promised. The paperwork to the 2 reale is downstairs in the office, locked in the safe. I haven't had time to go find the file. But I think Phillip was the King of Spain at the time the ship was sunk by a hurricane in the Caribbean. The hole in it was for stringing it on a leather cord since it was actually use as currency during that time. Sailors would sometime string their coins on a cord to wear around their neck to keep from losing their money. As you can see, this coin is well worn. I use to wear it all the time.
The Atocha coin that I had given my son when he was 16 is a reproduction of a Spanish Reale coin made from silver salvaged from the Atocha using the actual Spanish stamps. This coin is much thinner than mine. My son wanted a coin necklace like mine when he started diving. He picked this out when we celebrated his first wreck dive. I had plans to have it set into a gold bezel like mine but never got the chance.
