What do ya'll think about the new Art Deco line? I'm kind of on the fence. I love colorful bags but they are expensive full price imo for just coated cotton, & I've never been a fan of handles in that light color. If the black background version had black handles I'd be all over it.

This design is not my thing. I do like the rainbow of colors, but it's too much logo
for me. And, I have a bad history with untreated natural vachetta leather...
mine always stains the first time I use a bag with handles/trim like that.

As for Dooney coated canvas in general.... I own a few handbags, some small
DB logo (Gretta design) and some in prints.... hydrangea, and 1 or 2 others.
I'm selective in the prints because I like my outfits/handbag pairings to look
intentional. It bothers me to wear a print that doesn't enhance the outfit or in
some way clashes with the colors or patterns of my clothing.
I also don't find the coated canvas to be especially light weight.
Maybe a few ounces lighter than a leather bag, but since I favor
larger size handbags, every handbag is heavy to me, even the Dooney
nylon handbags.

I think the Dooney coated canvas and nylon handbags are very good quality.
But.... I love the feel of good leather, so the price and the print of the coated
canvas have to be special enough for me to opt for coated canvas over leather.

Yes that type trim stains fast it seems.

I’m glad you made this thread I’ve been meaning to ask about this specific type of bags. I’ve posted videos from the guy who cuts into high end luxury bags LOL. I’ve watched a few of his reviews on LV; he said that LV is even using this type of leather. He scrapes it off with his knife.

I mentioned in this forum, that I got a bag over the summer with this material. It felt like vinyl to me, not the leather I’m used to from D&B. I’ve also noticed their Disney line uses this too.

What’s the deal with this coated-cotton, coated-leather?

What lines have this? Saffiano & Greta right?

It’s not a bad looking bag. The colors are perfect for the summer. Not too keen on the light colored strap & handles. They’re either going to get stained and/or settle with uneven coloring from the oil (sweat) in our hands.

Scrapes it off w/a knife - oh no! The biggest advantage of the coated fabric bags imo is that they're lightweight.
Saffiano isn't fabric however. It's pressed leather (at least that's what were told). The Gretta collection is coated fabric and all the really multicolored Dooney bags (except Dipinta) are coated fabric.

There is a difference between coated fabric (canvas or cotton) and coated leather....
although in some cases they may look or feel the same.
Coating is applied to protect the underlying material from stains, dirt, moisture.

In the case of coated cotton or coated canvas, the coating may also make the
surface feel more like a pebbled leather.... and that's why some people have
trouble telling the difference. And certainly some listings are confusing,
ambiguous, or downright misleading, especially on the preloved market.

In the case of coated leather, it can be a very thin coating or a thicker one.
Sometimes it's used to give the leather a shine, like patent leather.
Sometimes it's used as part of an embossing process and with some
croco embossed leathers. Sometimes it's used to protect
the leather from moisture. It may also be used to give the leather
some body if it's a very thin leather.

I guess the implication is that if the leather is coated, then somehow it
wasn't as good as it could have been to start with. And that's probably
true in many cases, but not necessarily in all cases.

As consumers we rarely have enough information regarding the underlying
quality of the leather used in our handbags. Lots of marketing terminology
is used but it's not specific. Even if you are told that the leather is full grain,
you don't know the quality of that piece of leather, where on the animal it
came from, and if/how the surface has been treated (sanded, buffed, waxed,
etc.). Then we get into the mysteries of the tanning process and dyeing
process. And what is the implication for the quality of the leather if it has
been tumbled during processing or stretched or embossed?

And finally, I don't know what applying some chemical to a peiced of leather from a deconstructed handbag is telling us. Does it show the leather was coated? Is it merely
a chemical interaction with the dye? What does the lack of that chemical reaction
show us? And, if it's an old handbag, what about the products/conditioners/etc that
might have been applied by the prior owners?

I'm only mentioning this from personal experience when I pare down my D&B bags, but my leather bags sell very fast and there is much less interest in the fabric bags. It certainly does not matter if you love a bag and plan on keeping it forever.

This happens with shoes as well. I have been buying Sarah Flint shoes and I had a fabric pair that was too big. Inserts did not help. The fabric are almost as much as the leather calf/suede, but I had to sell the NIB shoes at -70% off to get something back.

Just saw this thread. Like @lavenderjunkie I love a rainbow of colors, but not in Logo. I remember when the Splash (I don't know if that's the official name) design debuted I didn't like it because it looked like someone spilled paint all over the bag. But my love for color made me give it a second and third look and I like it now. If I really wanted it I would have to look on the resell market for it now. (Not looking now.)
Regarding the light handles, I prefer light handles with colorful bags. I'm aware of the risk but I'd be willing to chance it if I found a design I liked. I think because I carry my bags with very casual clothes I'm not so hung up anymore about flaws or marks. I retired from commercial banking and I wanted my bags to look polished and professional when I was working. It was exhausting trying to protect my bags.
