I think the top is just smooshed in more in the pic above. You can change the shape a bit by smooshing in the top, like you would do with a pillow.

When I double the strap on my grommet duffle (the bigger one - not the mini), and wear it as a shoulder bag, there is not enough room for my arm to be comfortable. If I smoosh the top in like a pillow, the top part becomes rounder in depth and the strap opening becomes bigger. It makes a U out of the zipper and I have a little arm rest if I need it. The overall height of the bag appears much smaller in that case.
