Have you looked in the pockets? I have found it in the pocket eg exterior pocket sometimes. They are not intending the numbers to be found easily.

Well, your last resort is to take it to Cartier, if you are feeling brave, and ask them how to clean it... They won't tell you if it is authentic, but they may tell you not to put anything on it.
