Not really sure but that's what it looks like...seller didn't disclose the mark and when she was called on it she reduced the price so I took a chance....I've tried Leather CPR, Apple conditioner, rubbing with damp microfiber towel. Here's a pic

any advice @LostInBal ?
My DH as experience dyeing vinyl upholstery and might be able to mix a color to lightly wash over a section of the bag but there is a risk it could be worse if he misses

Gosh, it seems the bag was soaked with water. At this point I would try with a leather re couloring balm like “Forniture clinic” one. You can find it in Amazon.
who knows? I thought maybe it had a bottle of water inside that leaked....it's a line - above and below the line the color is fine. the things people do to their bags
thanks for the advice

Impressive work @LostInBal !

What kind of powder are you using and roughly how long did the entire process take? I want to tackle some dirty chèvre handles on a piece I purchased recently, but afraid I’ll mess it up as the leather feels quite delicate there. Any tips you can share are very much appreciated!
Please could you post a pic of the affected area? In here or privately if you can.

Yes! Here you go. One is significantly worse than the other. Is there a chance to resuscitate these with some @LostInBal CPR guidance?

Great photos, thank you for sharing
First of all, get a soft eraser and rub only the dark area but be careful it must be done very, very gently. Repeat the process till you feel most of the oils are gone. Use a little piece of clean cotton towell to remove the remains of the eraser in between. This takes some time and patience but the results should be obvious. Then, we’ll start with the second step which it is powder and heat. You’ll need foot and shoe powder and an hairdryer.
