Hi dear jewellery sub-forum TPFers, I need to pick your experience and knowledge on a dilemma I have. I have not been big on fine jewellery in the past. Just some odd pieces Tiffany, Bulgari, some silvers from Hermes, ruby necklace from auction etc. I have always been a bag girl. Anyway, having acquired some of my HG bags in the past 2 years, I now turned my attention to Jewllery. I am now considering my next big purchase in this department. I have never been big on watches. So given a set budget of circa say £5000, should I go for a classic watch from Rolex or Cartier, or should I get a ruby diamonds ring? Ruby is my birth stone so I have always wanted one to match my ruby necklace. So what is a better choice, especially from retaining value perspective? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! TIA!!

1 vote for the classic investment watch. You simply cannot go wrong with a nice Cartier or Rolex watch and they really elevate any outfit one chooses to wear.

You can shop around for your ruby ring at smaller jewelers for a better deal.

what about a steel cartier or rolex and now or later a ruby eternity band? good rubies are near impossible to find much less afford. I would buy a vintage or pre-owned ruby ring without a doubt (unless money is no object) and a classic watch

What's your current watch collection? I think a classic watch is definitEly nice wth your Hermes bag collection.
Which Rolex/Cartier are you eyeing?

Classic watch!

Quality rubies are extremely difficult to find right now. Unless you have a jeweler that might have older stock, I'd go with the watch first.

I would go with a classic investment watch like a Rolex or Cartier!

I agree with others also, go the classic watch!

:)

Look like the watch is the winner! Thanks twitspie, explorer27, skyqueen, Kitsunegrl, chanel-girl, lily25, imum for all your inputs! Much appreciated!

are you a watch sort of person? personally I prefer buying jewellery over watches, I think you need to figure out which item you would prefer more and decide from there! :D

This is where my dilemma comes from. I was never big on watches. Nor was I big on rings or bracelets. In fact, I disliked having any jewellery near my hands as I work at a desk and typing a lot of the time. But earlier this year, I started to wear more bracelet and ring as I have bought quite a few pieces. And now I am quite used to having them on/near my hands and I like the look those pieces bring. So now I've turned my focus on jewellery. So I really don't have a preference one way or the other.
