Interesting. The weddings I've been to had uncles and aunties giving red packets to the bride and groom during the tea ceremony. My mom and dad have never given jewelry even to close family members, only hong pao.
Giving gold jewelry is the really traditional way. Nowadays a lot of people just give out red packet instead as money is always easier and more practical.

My family is aboriginal/native Taiwanese and in our traditions, you receive jewelry from the women in your family. For us, not only is it a sign of wealth and a blessing, but also a means of insurance to protect the daughters of the family. The thinking is that this way women can help protect younger women from financial hardship or even fund an escape if your husband is abusive.

Yellow gold is traditional but often, like when I was married, your female family members will ask you what you want. It's typical for the larger pieces of jewelry to be accompanied with a small item of yellow gold.

Probably it depends on the culture and country you live in.... and possibly your age too!!! I went to a couple last year - one in the Far East and one in US and they still followed the format I mentioned: parents and close relatives gave jewellery and friends and other relatives either followed western tradition of choosing something from a wedding gift list or red packets of money.
