Do you check the setting of your engagement ring from time to time?

I heard a little sound as I was trying to move my diamond up and down using my index finger. Does that mean that the setting is not secure?

I have only had it since May of this year? I have a 4 prong setting....

Absolutely get it checked--do not wear it til it's checked. Any movement/sounds are not a good sign.

I check mine every day after I clean it. I tap it, I loupe it.

How much do you guys pay to tighten the diamond? I have to pay $20 per diamond . :( & that's pretty expensive in my opinion. :( I check all of my diamonds in my pendant & rings with a 10X loupe. Don't wear it until you tighten it or you will risk loosing the diamond.

I never had to pay for tightening a stone. The jewelers I go to (and they vary) do it for free. I am shocked you by how much you pay.

Like everyone said, you'd better take your e-ring to your jewelrer A.S.A.P. When 4 prong setting is not secure, the center stone would easily come off the shank. 6 prong setting is by nature more stable.

When I shake the ring very closely to my ear, I don't hear any sounds, but when I tap part of the diamond surface (ie. tap the left part then the right, sort of wiggle it a little bit), I can hear a bit of a sound. Is that normal? Can you ladies try tapping only part of your diamond, and see if you hear anything?

On Cartier's website, they suggest that you should shake the ring, and see if you hear anything -- I don't.....

I also searched on the internet, and found that you should tap the ENTIRE surface of your diamond, and see if it moves....well if I tap the entire surface downwards, then it doesn't move and I can't hear anything.

So my question is, should a well set diamond kind of wiggle even a little bit when you just tap one side of it, or should it sit perfectly tight without any wiggle room at ALL in the setting? I have the four-prong setting, but each prong has double claws....I hope it's a relatively secure setting. The reason I am asking before I take it to the jeweler is that I live in Canada and I bought it in the States....Does anyone know if Birks can check your setting for you even if you didn't buy from them?

Thanks everyone...I didn't know you can tighten the stones for free. :( I bought my Tiffany ring on ebay...that's why I have to just bring it in a jewelry shop to have it fix :(

Every time I get my diamonds cleaned the jeweller is checking them if they are loose too. Because I'm a loyal customer he never charges for any of the above.

You should definitely get it checked out before wearing it again. The diamond should not be able to wiggle at all.

Hopefully you can find a local jeweler that can look at it for you. Maybe ask around for a referral from friends.

A gemstone should not wiggle or move or make any noises at all. If it does, it has been set crooked or it has been banged into something. Another slight bump might possibly dislodge the stone from the setting.

My e-ring diamond dislodged in the street once. Thank goodness I was able to retrace my steps and find it (outside!!). To this day I still wonder how that was even possible, given it was one of the busiest intersections in midtown Manhattan (NYC)

If you can wiggle the stone while it's in the setting, it's time to get the jeweler to secure it asap.

I would definitely have it checked out and also call the place you bought it due to the fact you have only had for 3 months. I had to have my engagement band reset due to less than superior work the first time.
