Hello all. I'm new to buying Chanel and need some help. I'm looking into buying a vintage Chanel caviar flap. Why do some caviar bags have the trim around the edge and some don't? Is this a difference in the model? Is there anything I should note for authenticity?

See picture attached. One of the red has the trim but the other one doesn't. The black has a trim but the white doesn't.

It's called edge stitching. The classic colors like Black and Beige Clair always seem to have it. Some seasonal colors do, others don't. I don't know any rhyme or reason. Most of mine do just by sheer chance.

Thank you. Does the black ever come without it in caviar? I have seen this in the medium size. Does that mean it was not authentic? Thank you.

Edge stitching on Permanent (REV) Black & Beige Clair. Lamb is not edge stitched. If you saw Black Caviar with no edge stitching, it was likely a seasonal variation. Seaonal black is pretty rare as Chanel usually doesn't bother making Black in the seasonal fabrications. Chevron excepted of course and those are edge stitched. There have been other exceptions over the years, usually if you see a black quilted with different hardware other than the regular gold & silver, that flap would have been from a particular season, not the permanent range.

Wowwww, finally someone answered my question. I always wondered, why the seasonal colors don't have the edge stitching and i perceive the caviar as much more luxurious looking. I think with caviar, it can make the bag look cheaper. I don't like prominent stitching on edges as it reminds me of cheap replica bags. Hope they will make more without the edge stitching in the future.

Edge stitching keeps the flap from folding up as some without turn up. Also , the back of bag will not show creases. If you look at unstitched bag without the line of stitching across back of bag where you fold it open you will see visible creases in the quilting. Just my observation on the coco handles.

Two years late but heck just sharing what I know and have researched on extensively. The edge stitchings come with the rev models only like the black n beige cf. These colours are the only caviar leather which apparently are thicker n somehow slightly "smoother or flatter caviar pebbles" compared to the seasonal colours. The seasonal colours caviar do not come in edge stitchings coz the leathers are usually softer than the rev ones. U can also observe the caviar grains / pebbles on the seasonal caviar are different from the rev like it's more defined
