Hello Celine lovers!

I am on the hunt for a forever coat - in a classic cut, double-breasted and in black. Today I tried on this cashmere style (I think a black version is on the way), and sadly it feels so gorgeous on. I say sadly, because it's over £4k... I feel like there's no getting away from these horrendous prices across every legacy brand. I tried on a Prada version and it was unlined and felt very flimsy and really not of great quality, and it was £6k?! Madness.

I would love your opinion on whether you think £4k is an insane amount to spend on a coat, or whether you think it's worth it long term, and also your thoughts if cashmere is too delicate and you'd suggest going for wool instead?

Some background on me: I live in London, so in a rainy city. I travel to NYC often, work in fashion. I have a MaxMara 101801 in Camel, and do not want the black version as it's too loose and fluid. Need more structure. I have a couple of pea coats from Phoebe's Celine and Hedi's Saint Laurent. But I don't have a long black, double breasted coat!

Would really love to hear from you if you if you have thoughts on this / happy with your Celine cashmere? Thank you

I don’t own any Celine RTW (I keep eyeing it though lol)
IMO £4K for a luxury brand coat is actually not too bad or not terrible I guess. Especially for a coat of that material and length.
But you have to love it 1000% and be okay with spending that amount. We all know luxury RTW is at a premium price. It just depends on how much you love the design and how it makes you feel when you wear it.
If this is going to be your forever coat and a staple in your wardrobe, and you think you’ll get your cost-per-wear out of it; then I’m not stopping you haha

I don't own any Celine & I do have a Max Mara Teddy so I understand your dilemma.
Coats for me are a special category & since I live outside NYC also very important for warmth,
style &comfort & now to have to think that as prices are rising, is spending that amount
making sense
For me I would say "yes".. If you love it which it sounds like you do & also having a black
double breasted classic coat is timeless & will last in a wardrobe for a long time & is filling
a need that you seem to have in your wardrobe.
I have several cashmere coats (Hermes) they do have a tendency to pill as that is the nature
of that particular fabric but I wear them because they feel so good on & Hermes coats
in general have details that I am attracted to.
While I do see many double breasted coats in wool, they don't seem to be as luxurious
as the Celine, JMO

If you adore it, you should get it.
If you are on the fence, you could wait to see if it goes on sale.
I would also check out YSL, since you mention that brand

ETA: @Saturday14 , I have a few Hermes cashmere coats that pill.
DH has an old Loro Piana icer cashmere coat that has never pilled and looks brand new.
i don’t know where Celine falls on this spectrum.

Hahaha love the support! Thank you. I'm going to give myself a month of sleeping / agonising over it to be super duper sure. Good feedback that the length also plays into the price. I never thought of that. I have a lot of Celine cashmere and wool knits, plus trousers and the quality is unmatched I feel. My SA said that come Spring, everyone is going to be shocked at the prices to come across everything especially bags and even denim. Really shocked he said

I do really love it, you're right. And you're right again that it would definitely fill a need in my wardrobe which is very capsule-driven and edited. Am told that Hedi amplified the product quality at Celine (hence the prices) and I must say I agree. I can get behind price increases ONLY IF it's visibly reflected in the product - unlike other major brands which are ironically deteriorating.

I was a huge Phoebe nut but the quality of Hedi's Celine is miles beyond what it used to be and I think this coat is handmade to add to it all. Okay so I'm writing away and talking myself into it even more  Thank you for your lovely reply, I come here because my friends and family won't understand and will say "Noooooooooo" ahaha!

Thank you for the ETA! I would imagine that this would pill. That's my one worry with this, that as it ages it may look "tired". SA said I can't wear this coat without using an umbrella if it's raining. Which is all the timmmme in London.

I think its lovely and I own 3 Celine coats (Phoebe era ) that are superb quality.
No I don't think 4k is an insane amount to spend on a coat in 2023 and a black double breasted coat will never go out of style.
The only thing I find one needs to be mindful with in a pure cashmere coat is the cuffs over time can get slightly worn..(I mean a couple of years) for that reason if I get the sleeves shortened I keep them still a little long so I can shorten them further if needs be later on if they show wear.
I tend to like a Cashmere/Wool or Alpaca Wool mix as they 'feel' more durable and I think look better if they get wet. (I live in London too).
Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide..
BTW.. Wardrobe NYC have done a nice long black double breasted wool coat, and I vaguely recall seeing one in Givenchy a couple of weeks ago.
and edited to add..I saw @880 mentioned YSL where I too have seen a coat that would fit the bill.
Finally a friend of mine brought a gorgeous Charcoal and Black herringbone long double breasted coat from Sportmax recently..
You dont mention your build but my friend is UK size 6 and around 5'3" and it was really beautifully tailored and didn't drown her..

Thank you so much for these tips! I had actually tried on this exact version, in black, at Celine this time last year in predominantly Wool with cashmere mix. Which I sort of prefer for the exact reason you said - durability. It was 'only' £2.6k  and a bargain compared to what I will likely pay now for the full cashmere. I was in two minds about getting my actual size (38 / UK 10 and 5"6 in height) or sizing up for the longer length, and missed out on both by the time I had decided, as they produce in low quantities.

I also recently saw the Wardrobe NYC you mention but my fashion-snob side wants to go for a legacy brand to avoid any future regret in 10 years etc.

I was also wondering whether it's better to get a bag for that price, but I don't need one, I need a long black double-breasted coat! I want to pair it with Adidas bottoms, trainers and cashmere knits on my casual days and dress it up when I need. To give you the full picture of what I have in my head right now

I don't think the price is outrageous but I would hesitate for two reasons- first how will it hold up to your super rainy climate ( and will you be reluctant to wear it when it's very rainy )?
And I would not like to pay that price and then it ends up pilling.
These are good questions. I don't think I'd be too concerned if it's drizzling but I know I'll be checking in the hourly forecast religiously to strategise my indoor / outdoor game. TBH I do that even in my usual gear - a Londoner's second nature!

On the pilling, I can't be sure but I think it would be prone to it. @maxroxxherhandbags have your Phoebe / cashmere coats pilled at all? X

You are on a Purse Forum, so when it comes to bag or a coat, you'll have varying opinions, but if
you aren't looking for a bag, then why not consider the coat (over several years, you will
have gotten cost per wear for sure & you'll be satisfied that you made/making the purchase
& it will likely be worth the investment
The black coat sounds like it will fill a void & update your wardrobe.
As suggested, there are some other options but not sure you will let the fashion-snob in you
overrule you in your thinking, IYKWIM
Going from casual to dressier, seeing the image in my head of this luxurious black Celine
double breasted very chic looking coat paired with your Adidas!
PS.. Wool & cashmere blends may have a tendency to pill perhaps not as much as cashmere
but nonetheless a consideration.
And many of us carry a raincoat for our special bags if we get caught in the rain, so carrying an
umbrella would not rule out making the purchase. I've been caught many times in the rain, LOL

I noticed that this coat is double face cashmere. Double faced wool and cashmere are everywhere this fall. I was going to point you in the direction of Max Mara till I read further down in your post. If this Celine is calling out to you, and you can do it, I say go for it!

@Saturday14 , are you opposed to vintage? Bc for this amount of money, I think you could find a preloved Chanel or Loro Piana or Akris cashmere coat. In my limited experience, Chanel cashmere wears like iron and is quite warm. And, if you are caught in the rain, it’s no big deal. (not that I would wear one in a total deluge). An alarm bell went off in my head when you posted that the Celine SA said this needs an umbrella. . .
