Cashmere long coat

I used to wear a lot of max Mara coats. In the end I stopped bc I felt they dwarfed me. I’m 5’2” and medium build, relatively broad shoulder for an Asian. I’m about a size 3 Chanel; 40 Dior, US 4-6. For many years, I was closer to 6-8, and the volume of Max Mara wasn’t entirely flattering. (I basically started to look like a chunky furry animal) I do think MM is warm, but there is just too much coat there. They lasted for years.

IMO, I believe LP or brunello are more finely made garments. LP is cut closer to the body, in a way that is more sartorial, less fashion. They’re built to last season after season. DH has a number of LP coats and jackets, and LPs weatherproof cashmere is outstanding. Lux and durable.

Most high quality cashmere or wool blend is Loro fabric, and they wholesale to other premier brands. haven’t purchased a long coat from Loro yet, but I keep an eye out every season. I tend to get distracted by most fashion type coats,so end up with Chanel or Dior (neither of which is warm). Or, Hermes, which, in cashmere, tends to pill.

The one long coat I have from Brunello is cut a bit closer to my body, but it still flows. It’s classic but not conservative, and I think it bridges the divide between sartorial and fashion. In 2022, it retailed for 12K USD, but my SA snagged it for me at 60% off. Even at that price, it gave me pause, bc it’s so relatively simple.

If it’s cold in my neck of the woods, I tend to grab a puffer (moncler/ Bogner/ fulsalp). If it’s not cold and I want something fun and fashionable, I layer another brand. So this type of coat is a niche, but forever piece for me. Loro Piana does go to sample sale which is better priced than boutique sale, but if you can wait for a department store post holiday sale, you might be able to get a good deal. HTH
Thanks so much. This was incredibly helpful.

Really interesting to hear about LP fabric wholesaling to others as well. I had no idea. I saw this coat on BG's site and was wondering why it said LP!

Ugh, I am such a sucker for the beauty of LP coats. I love the Chanel coats too but felt they were too thin for what I was looking for.

I love Chanel coats, but even the Chanel managers and SAs say the coco beige puffers are not for warmth, lol. The first Chanel collection in the early aughts was actually ski friendly, but subsequent ones were not as warm or durable.

LP is a fabric manufacturer (the foray into lifestyle goods is a recent executive decision by LVMH post acquisition)

Before that they had some RTW but it wasn’t at all to the extent of what you now see now (post 2013).

My mom is short, only 160, and very slim, 34-36 Italian, and she recently tried on a beautiful Fendi coat. It’s beautiful and I wanted to get it but It was too short on her. It’s this season coat. Very classic and elegant grey coat with a belt and F logos on the inside but you can’t see them while wearing, so it’s very elegant and not flashy.

This information is wonderful! Seems retail pricing of 100% cashmere long loose-fit robe style coats from Italian makers Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana and Max Mara are quite fictional so I won't allow those big numbers to scare me off. With multiple methods to get these all-cashmere coats at 70+% off - like off-season sales, special websites selling at Italian prices, Jan/Feb/March clearance events, or even buying them gently loved/used if necessary. I found that Loro Piana "Hayk", Max Mara "Ludmilla/Labbro" and the Brunello "Handcrafted" coats all have the same 100% cashmere, roomy shoulder, unlined, long fluid-flowing vibe, no buttons, large patch pockets and optional belt. Having investigated their Madison Ave boutiques in the same day I concluded that: Brunello simply doesn't have much selection in this particular style, Loro has more selection and very tempting, and Max Mara has the biggest selection. So it comes down to Loro Piana Hayk vs Max Mara Ludmilla in very similar colors. Pretty much the same coats around the same price. In the end I plan to spend $3k or less on which ever of these two present themself first!

Anybody have the Loro Piana Hayk?

Depending on your sizing it’s very easy to find discounts as you said! (Unfortunately some people are less lucky mainly extreme sizes where few units are produced)

With brunello you have to be careful because a lot of his new coats for winter 2024 are polyester lined instead of cupro/silk which is hilarious for coats with an MSRP of sometimes 10k plus.

Main benefit of buying from a store is having the alterations done on site (and if they eff up they can take the garment back and you get your credit). (This has sadly happened one too many times)

If you have a great tailor that you know then you can buy without any stress from any online vendor with the lowest price!

Be careful with the "bathrobe" style or wrap coats if you're short.
I tried on a beautiful pale turquoise coat from Akris Punto in the wrap style and it totally overwhelmed me. It was too roomy and fell down to my ankles and I looked like I was playing dress up in someone else's coat 😅

Bit of a late reply but I recently forayed into Burberry cashmere and I’m loving it! It’s absolutely butter-soft and so so so warm. I bought a short coat and loved it so much went back and bought a longer trench. I find Burberry cuts extremely flattering on my (US4/UK8, 5’3”ish, hourglass) figure. I do tend to size down a size for their relaxed fit garments however.
