Hi Living in the UK I haven't actually seen any moissanite. I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether it is a good idea to buy a ring with moissanite. I would like a nice ring without the huge expense of diamonds. I have read about it on the net and been looking at jewellery on E-Bay. It's not that cheap and I would like people's opinions on it before I splash out. Thanks.

Since it has almost double the refractive qualities of diamonds, it can look a little too 'bling' at times. I have seen it at JC Penney, and it was quite pretty.

It can look slightly green or gray rather than colorless, especially in bright daylight. So the first thing you would want to do with it is look at it under a variety of lighting conditions and have a good return policy.

I recently received moissanite earrings (1 ctw) - I was disappointed with their color in the box, but surprised at their whiteness while wearing them. They are very sparkly! They don't look like a typical diamond cut though, IMO.

I'm not sure I would want it for a ring that I could scrutinize, but I'm very happy with the earrings.

Target has moissanites also. i agree the smaller 1ct and below stones look more believable. the larger are way too shiny.. maybe if you wear them awhile and dont clean them it will look more natural =)

Thanks everyone for your replies.It's so difficult without seeing them irl. I have looked at the Asher stones as well but can't seem to find much of a selection of settings online. The one retailer for moissanite listed for the UK just doesn't answer the phone ,so don't know if they're still in business.Think I need to keep searching! :confused1:

Thanks for the link. I mustn't have been looking properly coz I had only found one retailer who I couldn't get in touch with . I'll give these ago. Thanks so much. :tup:

i just had a one carat moissantie set into my platinum and daimond setting. at first, i was a bit dissapointed in the color of the stone, i was looking at it in natural light, but i love it now. however, i'm not going to try to tell people that it's a diamond. i do like the fact that it's very sparkely and man made, and the fact that it wasn't mined.

Check out this thread. I would prefer Asha over Moissanite, but I like my diamonds white. Other women prefer a little warmth in their stones - I believe Moissanite is more an L-M diamond color range, whereas Asha is D-F.

i found this forum that was discussing diamond simulants, and i there is some first-hand knowledge from people who've had the asha for awhile. my concern would be how long they last.

I recently purchased a moissanite ring and will be receiving it soon. I don't expect it to look or behave like a diamond, nor will I tell people it's a diamond. I am looking forward to having a 6.5mm sparkly on my finger with a quality basket setting.

Moissanite is giving me the best opportunity in terms of size and cost. I believe the moissanite stones have more warmth in them, they fall within the J-K-L range.

If I can find this thread again, I'll let you know what I think honestly when I receive it in person....

p.s. I wanted to add... if the idea of a synthetic gemstone keeps you from getting one... I would recommend white sapphire. They can be gorgeous! I have a modest 3-stone and it's quite nice with just the slightest tinge of blue --

Just to update everyone and thank them for their thoughts. I have actaully taken the plunge and ordered a moissanite ring in palladium. The only thing I'm worrying about now(there always has t b something!!) is whether I should have gone for the 7.5mm stone instead of the 6.5mm which I ordered. The on-line advisor did say because of the halo setting and my finger size being quite small I should have the smaller stone. Hope she's right! I chose the moissanite over the asha because I read on one forum that someone's asha had lost it's coating after a year and looked dull and cloudy so thought better not risk it. Have I done the right thing??? :sweatdrop:

With the 6.5 and give or take 1-2 mm for the halo, you are going to have an area of around 7-8mm or more as a result. You did fine with the smaller stone.

I have a sz 7-8 US ring finger, and a 7mm princess cz (equiv of 2ct) is massive on my finger -- Most people don't question the 6.5mm and under white gemstone sizes, I think anything over 7mm and people start to stare or make remarks.

I'm still waiting for my ring to come in, I'm very impatient right now...
