Can I dye a birkin a different colour?

Not at all. I'm simply asking for some justifications behind people saying 'no', because as I stated above, if it's only because people don't want to ruin the 'pedigree' of the bag (for want of a better word) then that doesn't bother me. So far, the only reasoning behind people's advice has come from papertiger, who discussed that dye could change the feel of the bag, might scratch off, etc.
I think it foolhardy to buy a Premium product at a premium price with the intention of changing said product.
Its like me buying a hip length Chanel jacket (I only suit short Chanel jackets..the long boxy ones are awful on me) in a colour I dont like because I've always wanted a Chanel jacket and the too long/wrong colour one is within my budget..
Say I then buy it, get it dyed and shortened by a professional..
Its not really a Chanel jacket any more..(at least not to my mind, the fabric may have originally been chanel but the integrity of it has been changed due to dying process, and the actual design has been altered by shortening it)
I would rather wait even years (yes I have done so..) to buy the perfect jacket in the right colour right cut.
As previously mentioned Pink bags are extremely popular so I would be suspicious of a bargain pink Birkin in a popular size.
Edited to add...
I just saw the bag is listed at $850 there is NO WAY that bag is authentic..
In fact I'll eat my Hermes bags if that bag is proven by the likes of @bababebi to be authentic.
Please save your $850 keep saving, wait a couple of years and buy wisely.
I dont want you to get burned chasing a dream

For some context, this bag is listed at the equivalent of around US$850. Now I expect you to all immediately yell FAKE! and yes, you're probably right. If I were to entertain this bag I would take further steps to authenticate it.
To be honest even the super fakes cost more than $850 nowadays. I know we all love amazing deals but $850 for a birkin in any size or even the least popular colors just sound too good to be true. Like others have said, I think most of us fell in love with H bags mainly because of the aesthetic, but the quality of the leather and the craftmanship take up half of the luxury experience too. There are many birkin alternatives out there nowadays, if it wasn't for the leather and craftmanship I can easily opt for the cheaper alternatives and still be very happy. I might sound crazy to you but I love feeling and sniffing my H bags because the leather just feel so lush. Even if the $850 birkin turns out to be authentic, I'm afraid that all the work you plan on doing to it will still cost you a lot of money. Someone who's very skilled in dye and restoring H bags won't do it for cheap because it's not a simple process. In that case, you may be better of saving your money to put toward a birkin that while cost more, but it's already in the right size and color for you so you can get the full experience.

Thank you all for your help. I am definitely taking your feedback on board and will go over the replies again when I have more time to digest them.

Then, as someone also pointed out, I'd have to see if I could find someone who seemed able to do a good job dyeing it.

Do I have champagne taste on a beer budget? For sure!! That's why it's not so simple to wait for a better bag (for me) to come along. If I want to achieve owning a Birkin I have to get creative.

Listed as USD 850 as the starting bid or listed as the outright price? Bid I can understand and those usually come with reserve prices but outright …no.
There’s a reason why a lot of us won’t buy at a unicorn price:
1. It’s a scam and you might not get a bag delivered. Lose 850. OR the seller refuses to compensate if you try to return.
2. Fake bag manufacturing are ran mainly by criminal organisations and god knows what else they run, especially if you are turning in your credit card details.
3. Online pics - scammers are known to show pics of the real deal for the unsuspecting to authenticate and then they deliver a fake. Plenty of cases where ppl spotted pics of the bags they are selling as used by scammers.
4. a lot will want to bag spa at Hermes to restore the bags and if it is found to be fake in Paris - Hermes will destroy the bag under French law (Not your purpose since any dyeing exempts them from bag spa-ing the birkin).

If you want the quality of a birkin and the feel of a birkin - you can’t actually redye it or do anything major to it. Ripping the leather of its top stain to change its color will wreck the leather quality itself.

Here‘s an idea, why not buy a cheaper but still a luxury brand of bag with the level of quality still present. Plenty of choices regarding well made brands for every level of spending.

Or just wait. I would say that a lot of us will patiently wait for the amount we drop on a real quota bag from the actual Hermes boutique. It isn’t so much a pedigree but rather we will like our bags to last our lifetime and maybe the next generation‘s lifetime. Leather can’t last without once in a while maintenance and Hermes offers the lifelong maintenance of the bags, as opposed to other brands. Hence ppl will ‘invest’ and if or when their tastes change, they can sell it and recoup to get a new bag.

Odds are, the bag you’re considering is likely not authentic, therefore not made out of authentic Hermes materials. Therefore, people’s experience with altering their Hermes bags wouldn’t be pertinent to the bag in question…
I wanted advice on dyeing a bag.
Not whether to buy this specific bag.
In the end I told you all the price to explain why I can't just wait for another bag in a better colour to come along.

Sure, but I'm not going to buy a bag without authenticating it.
So I might find a different bag in the future that I still want to dye. My original question stands. That was the point of the thread. I don't understand why people are getting so worked up about this.

Because we answered in good faith of the premise of the bag, as if you were going to buy a specific bag--but the info provided was misleading. You were talking about a scam bag, by definition, a detail most would've preferred to know up front. But note, if you had phrased it differently, as a hypothetical for an actual authentic Birkin, the responses would have been...exactly the same.

ok I'll answer your original question.
Yes you can
but I wouldn't advise it.
happy now?

Please do not turn on each other and address the question as asked in the first post.

We have no proof the bag is authentic or fake. The advice given still holds good for an authentic bag.
