a swatch could be an heirloom, or a timex, an heirloom is something of sentimental value passed on to another generation...my father gave me his Mr. Peanut watch (he did) it means more to me than a rolex. i loved that watch when i was a kid.

who gives a flying fig whether it is quartz or automatic?

Aww..how sweet:love: I totally agreed w/ you, for me Cartier watches are MY weakness, but for my girls when it's passed to them it will be "the watch that mom passed on to me":smile1:, simply that.

I agree completely that an heirloom could be anything of sentimental value, but the watch in question is a new purchase.

I simply think that if you intend to buy something for yourself that you will pass on as an heirloom, it is better to get the better quality piece.

My fiance is an avid watch collector and much of it has rubbed off on me. Amongst watch collectors, quartz movements are not as highly regarded as automatics.

do quartz watches have the floating seconds hand or only the automatic? When I buy a new watch at Patek prices I'd consider the movement, not whether it has diamonds on it (I'm a girl ^^) I don't know the proper word for it, but it's the seconds hand that most rolexes have, that doesn't stop after each second but moves in such little steps that it seems to move on without stop. or does automatic only refer to the fact that you don't have to wind the watch up to keep it moving?

Jeez, quartz? You nasty cheapskate! And Cartier? Eeeeeeew! Any watch below a platinum $1.7 million Patek Philippe is just tacky rubbish if you ask me. You might as well strap a turd on your arm, and by passing that on as an heirloom you are basically spitting in the face of your children. Shame on you!

this is my post of the week :roflmfao::roflmfao::roflmfao:

will PMP ever give up LOL?

you are talking about 2 questions here. If you just ask whether automatic watch is more expensive than quartz (other things being equal), then yes automatic is more expensive. However, if you thinking of the heirloom question, I think your daughter maybe less concern of whether it is quartz or auto. I hate auto watches, I just stop wearing them after a while. Chanel came out with a quartz 38mm J12 with diamonds indicators and I went for that instead of the auto version even though my friends said the auto version has better value....
