Hello....
I am stilling deciding on the Cartier Santos.

I now have a delima..... would you consider a brand name watch (like Cartier) a future heirloom even if it is quartz?

I work with a watch nut..... he told be a quartz watch is nothing as it has no soul.

He told me some amazing stuff.... like a quartz watch would stop in the event of a nuclear accident too close..... apparantly the crystal would blow from the explosion?

He also told me a quartz watch has a limited life... a mechanical watch will last indefinately..... but a quartz always will need parts......

I am a big fan of quartz..... my omega constallation is quartz and i love it.... mechanical watches are a real pain ..... you need to constantly wear..... and or wind.....

IS A LUXURY WATCH STILL OK IF IT IS QUARTZ?

Jeez, quartz? You nasty cheapskate! And Cartier? Eeeeeeew! Any watch below a platinum $1.7 million Patek Philippe is just tacky rubbish if you ask me. You might as well strap a turd on your arm, and by passing that on as an heirloom you are basically spitting in the face of your children. Shame on you!

I would have to say no.

Many ladies' watches do not have automatic movements because the thought is that women buy more for the jewelry while men buy for the movement/complications.

honestly i could care less about automatic vs. quartz...i guess i buy a watch for the way it looks, i am not going to be a stickler about the quality of the movement.

Exactly the reasoning behind most women's timepieces using less expensive quartz movements. You can buy that solid gold Patek Philippe with diamonds, and it is a quality watch, but in the end, it still has a $5 movement inside.

If it's an heirloom, you should treat it as an investment. Invest in the better movement that will last longer and will be able to be serviced or repaired down the road.

Hello,
I can't see anything wrong with quartz.
A Patek quartz is certainly no $5 movement......

A watchmaker told me a Patek quartz is actually a work of art - has many moving parts.

Most ladies cartier are quartz, this is also the case for Audemars, Omega.

Jeff.

My retired model Patek is quartz, and at $75,000.00 CAN in 2005;everyone should own such a piece of crap!

A quartz Patek, is not for everyone.

Sorry,
I just went back and noticed the OP is banned.

Hysterical post!! :roflmfao:

^^ Thanks :D

Also, in the event of a nuclear explosion near your house, I think the last thing you should be worried about is whether your Cartier Santos is still working or not and whether it can still be passed on as an heirloom. It wouldn't matter if the watch was working or not if your children were born with tentacles thanks to the radiation.

a swatch could be an heirloom, or a timex, an heirloom is something of sentimental value passed on to another generation...my father gave me his Mr. Peanut watch (he did) it means more to me than a rolex. i loved that watch when i was a kid.

who gives a flying fig whether it is quartz or automatic?
