Buying a diamond ring on craigslist

I would meet at a jeweler or appraiser that YOU picked with a cell phone/wireless connection. If the diamond was all you hoped it would be I would transfer the money via internet banking (interac) right there in front of them. No cash to rob, no fake ring...

It might be interesting to call the person (if they have a phone number listed) and get a feel as to whether they will fax you the GIA cert, are they willing to meet you at an appraiser or jeweler...maybe why are they selling the diamond
This may help you decide whether to just drop it or continue to pursue

I totally avoid purchasing anything from craigslist. Just to much fraud and crime occurs on this site.

I personally wouldn't do it, however, if you decide to; please, be careful and validate the product before buying.

Good luck with your decision.....

that sounds too good to be true
but if you can find a reputable jeweler or appraiser of your choice and have the person meet you there, that would be the way to do it
If you ask them to do that and they have a problem with it, you'll know there's something funny going on

I would have to echo the sentiment posted here which courses through the entire thread. Caveat Emptor. CL is so skanky IMO that a purchase of a high ticket item is really risky (is this old office furniture that the person doesnt want to spend a few dollars to go to the reputable route?). And as I have highlighted above the Jeweler needs to be your selection, not theirs. Anyone who cannot understand why you want to do that is a crook and should be run from.

so what happened??

I'd love to know myself!

I'm not against buying anything on CL, but I definitely agree with everyone else who stated that they'd meet at a jewelry store. That protects your well-being along with the seller's (safety-wise), and helps you figure out if you're getting a good deal or not.

I left a voice mail and emailed the seller but never heard back. I guess it was not meant to be. I definitely appreciate all the advice, these are all great tips to keep in mind should I buy something on craigslist in the future.

I for sure would not have gone any other route other than meeting at a jeweler of my choice. But regardless buying something like this through craigslist is scary.

The rings in our budget when we have gone to retail jewelers are around the 3/4 ct size. I guess I just got a little excited at the idea of finding a 2ct in our price range!!

I was also thinking you could get something larger for your budget. In addition to the wonderful ladies here, there is a website called Pricescope that has a lot of great information on diamonds, what to look for, resources for buying, etc.
