Just wanted some opinions. My boyfriend and I have been shopping for the ring and have been looking at second hand, estate jewelry etc. in order to get the most diamond for our budget. I have been checking craigslist as well and saw a 2.08 CT F color SI2 Clarity round brilliant solitaire with GIA cert listed for $4900. I feel like this is a great deal because when I looked up similar diamonds on blue nile they came up in the 12K to 16k range. However, I do not have much diamond experience so I'm not sure if there is something I'm missing or if there is more information that would affect the value. I guess I'm just a little suspicious because it seems most people having a diamond this size would sell it to a jeweler and not on craigslist right?

Also does anyone have advice about buying a diamond ring of craigslist. Should you meet at a jewelry store to have it checked out? Or is it just to risky to buy something like this off craigslist?

Meeting at a jewelry store to have it checked out is a good idea. I would also find out the cut of the diamond. Maybe they can email a copy of the whole GIA certificate for you. It does sound like a really good deal though.

that sounds too good to be true
but if you can find a reputable jeweler or appraiser of your choice and have the person meet you there, that would be the way to do it
If you ask them to do that and they have a problem with it, you'll know there's something funny going on

I would be very careful. Just because they're sending you a copy of the GIA certificate does not mean that that is the diamond you would be getting. Definitely insist on meeting at a jewelry store, to have the ring looked at by an authorized jeweler.

You'd want absolutely solid tech specs, proven--but insist also on its history so that you don't wind up with stolen merchandise or a conflict diamond. If this seller can't be clear about where it originated, that's a problem.

This could just be a couple/person selling a ring from a broken relationship. This is one of the few venues where you can get a "reasonable" amount reselling.

There is no way I would buy anything that expensive on CraigsList. There are too many recent stories of people being robbed when they show up to buy or sell $$$ items, or receiving fakes or receiving nothing at all. In my opinion, it really isn't worth the potential trouble you might be exposing yourself to.

Honestly I would not do it. There really is no way of protecting yourself if you get scammed.

Just last night on the news here, was a couple who sold on craiglist & got paid in counterfit money. It looked so real that there was only one very small thing wrong with it. Which most of us wouldn't catch.
