Are ou talking about the Tiffany Diamonds By The Yard earrings? The bezel set ones? If so, I wanted those as engagement earrings (I don't wear a ring but BF wants to give me diamonds anyway), and they are STUNNINGLY gorgeous. (...)
As far as the money goes, 1.5 month's salary seems like quite a lot to spend on a pair of earrings. If you have a large amount of savings and are really secure then I say why not, but if you don't have 6+ months worth of living expenses saved then I would say it's a bad idea.
Jordanjordan, YES, there we are: hooked on stunningly gorgeous diamonds! :)

I have lots of savings but it does not feel right to use it for fun. I am glad this board is reasonable! somehow way more reasonable than the MakeUpAlley/Fashion board ;)
If I really want them I can save for them. And if the one particular pair is sold, there will be another one with excellent quality available in the future.

I don't know if you have read my other posting: I just returned a solitair-diamond-ring this week, having been disappointed from the not so sparkling stone & setting.
The stone I returned (I had the change to see it without setting) was far from gorgeous.

My mum would probably call me a snob when I turn down a 0.38ct / S1 / H / good cut stone and rather pick studs half the size BUT VVS1 / F / excellent cut.

Yes, the diamonds at tiffany's where WHITE and BRIGHT. And brightened up my face. Having had this experience, how these stones in the really well done setting can brighten up your face you can TELL when the life of the stone is missing. And I like the idea that there are things out there which are really really nice. Even if I can't afford them.

After these experiences: having tried various studs and returning the ring I am a bit afraid of buying online.

I would love to hear how your studs please you!
The bezel - setting at bluenile looks more solid, less light than the Peretti, no?
Having seen the settings at bluenile and how a setting can reduce the life of a stone, I even consider chosing prongs for studs.

hope to read from you on this board as soon as the studs arrive! btw: happy engegement!

Pricescope has great ideas for diamonds. You can get bigger diamonds with the same quality for less money. How about a compromise? You save half of the money and take half out of savings.
I was not aware pricescope also sells diamonds. Thank you!

regarding the comprimse: well, in 2010 I already took money out of savings for my apartment. I feel like leaving the saving alone for good.

frick&frack, thank you for your posting!
I must admit I thought of diamonds as something that will last forever and could not be damaged ;-)
...accurate facts - that makes sense!

diamonds are the hardest gemstones, but they can still get chipped...especially around the girdle (diameter/edge of the table of the stone) & the edges of the facets. I have a diamond from my great great grandmother that has a 3 chips.

I want to thank you all again!
On my journey to jewelry-knowledge I took some big steps.

my boyfriend had no idea I was discussing several questions around here and when I told him he gave me one advice that was still missing:

! learn about the stuff you are dealing with, compare, look, compare ...
and most important:
don't rush! take your time

I will add this to the former tips!

I haven't gotten mine yet and it is very possible the setting will be a little different but I'm not sure. As far as the quality goes, at bluenile you select your own stones so I selected ones that were actually better quality than the tiffany ones I was looking at. You can get REALLY specific about what you want for each individual characteristic of the stone and it will search their database. What I did at first was take the specs from the Tiffany ones I wanted, enter them into west nile to see what they had, and then I narrowed down further by picking better quality in the categories that were important to me, and it still turned out cheaper.

Since diamonds are objectively rated, I figure if I get one just as good as Tiffany in most categories and better in the ones I think matter most to me then I will at least be getting a diamond that is as good if not better, for way cheaper.

Hope this helps!
