I am an extremely lucky lady and received a black Burberry Short Kensington Heritage Trench Coat for Christmas this year from DH and FIL.

For reference, I am 5'-2" and 122 lb (long torso, short legs, haha). The size 2 coat (see pic below) felt slightly constricted in the shoulder/arm area, and it bunched up a bit in the chest area, so I returned it and will be sizing up to a size 4.

I am a musician, so half of my wardrobe consists of black outfits. Within the short period of time that I was in possession of the black trench coat, it seemed like I could see every spec of dust, lint, and dog fur (pug and Australian shepherd owner here; just look at my socks). Even though I felt like the black color looked really sharp, I'm afraid of having to carry around a lint roller every time I wear it. I want to be able to enjoy the coat without all the silly maintenance.

So, my question for all of you wonderful people is: when I exchange for the size 4, should I go for the classic honey color instead?

First of all, your husband and father-in-law have good taste! The coat looks lovely, although I do agree that going one size up would be ideal. As for the color, personally, I'd stick with black, especially since you have lots of black clothing, so styling it would be a lot easier.

Also, this might be an example of overthinking, but... I imagine if you were to go for a different color, it would seem like your husband and father-in-law did not get you the coat you wanted. Getting the size wrong is one thing, happens to me quite a lot when I shop for myself! But choosing another color? Frankly, I wouldn't. If you really want a trench coat in Honey, just buy another one sometime in the future.

I, too, thought about that exact dilemma of going for a different color when they went through the decision to get me the black. Thank you so much for your input!

When making your decision you should also bear in mind that the black classic trench (not the polyester taffeta) fades through sun exposure and dry cleaning. I have asked Burberry and there us nothing they can do. I still love my black trench but it looks well loved .... I have now a honey one as well.

You're welcome! :)

That's actually a really good point I personally had no idea about, so thank you. Perhaps the sun exposure wouldn't be much of an issue in northern regions where there isn't much sun except in summer?

And this is why I posed this question on this forum because the thought of fading never even crossed my mind. Thank you!

Lighter colors may stain permanently... that's a problem I had with my Stone one and eventually sold it. Pen, makeup, dirt, etc never got out (Honey may be more resistant to dirt/smudges). I have the black one too and luckily no stains. It hasn't faded in the 5 years I've had it but I've only dry cleaned it once.

What a sweet gift! Love the black on you! Go up a size and enjoy it. I use a bit of tape to get lint off :)
But I don’t notice much lint in your action pic

I suppose I’ll be the unpopular opinion — of course, I would size up to a 4 but would exchange for honey. I would do so mainly because of what you wrote in your post. The downside of owning a black trench already seems to be bothering you. Plus, honey is still a classic neutral while being a nice change/contrast to your usual black wardrobe.

If you decide to exchange colors, I would just be honest with my hubs and FIL about the change of heart providing a brief reason. It is clear they love and care so much about you — I’m sure they want you to have a trench you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Good news — regardless, you have a timeless wardrobe piece!

Hey ! I will just follow and enhance what people in favor of honey color said. You are a musician already wearing a lot of black clothes, your family got it right when buying you a black trench coat. But you seem to worry about the color ? If I were you I would just go for size up 4 and honey color.

A trench coat is originally beige and you must honor it. So I think for a first trench coat it deserve to be beige and nothing else.

I believe it will enhance your look and black outfit. Moreover it will put the coat where it belongs "highlighted and above everything". Just got it honey and you will see how amazing it will look.

Oh what a shame for you.

I have both, but I don't have any pets). Maybe try the short black one in a different fabric? My black one is a water repellant satiny fabric (from Nordstrom's a million years ago) and is the length of yours.

My stone one is a long one and I have never worn it.

Burberry have several different black ones:

No idea why Burberry uses USA sizes... it's so arbitrary -- by their logic, a US 2 is a UK 4, but IRL a UK 4 size is more like a US 00.

I always stick to my UK size (8), even though that's a US 6 in their sizing chart (I wear a US 2 dress size)... or I go up to a UK 10 (size US 8 in their eyes). /rant

Anyways, what an amazing husband and FIL!!!

Definitely agree to exchange for a size (or two) up.

Wear a heavier knit or the type of outfit you usually wear, when you exchange it so you can tell which size will be more comfortable. :flowers:

As for being hesitant about black... when you go to exchange the size, try on a honey one for fun!

See how it looks with your standard outfit, then ask yourself if you still love the black one.

If you're hesitant because of the dog hair, I wouldn't worry about that. It's not like a sweater or pair of socks; most people won't realise there's dog hair/dust/lint on it... and besides, you likely keep your coats hung up/away from your pets (?) and the lighter ones show dirt way faster.

FWIW, I have 3 trench coats (stone, black, and honey (OK, I haven't had the time to wear the honey one yet since I've been in Panamá last year & this year, but it's waiting for me at our house in MT lol)) and primarily wear a lot of black. While the monochrome look of all-black is great, I wear my stone trench the most.

My black trench hasn't faded, but tbh, I've hardly worn it or had it cleaned in the last 10 years, because I love the lighter ones more... If it does fade, IMO, that's a good thing -- they're heritage coats meant to be worn and loved.

It's all personal preference though, so listen to your heart!

This looks AMAZING on you! I have a black one that is years old (from the now-defunct Burberry Brit line). My trench is named the Reymoore (or something along those lines). I remember trying it on and being very confused about the sizing. At the time, I was a size 8 in jackets, but wound up buying a size US 14. As I was trying on the trench, a very petite woman came into the store to make an exchange…she had done a phone order, but despite being a consistent size 0 in Burberry, the woman had to exchange for a size 6 or 8! I’ve lost weight since purchasing, so it’s probably a size too big now, but I still love it; and it actually adds to the oversized trench look!

Would love to hear an update. What a wonderful gift! Enjoy

I own the Chelsea trench in dark navy blue (it looks almost black). Little specks of dust do show up, but it’s not to the extent that I need to carry a lint roller with me.

For one, the coat is meant to be worn, it’s not going to be in perfect condition after continual use. Secondly, since you have a lot of black outfits that means it matches the rest of your wardrobe. Therefore, you’ll likely get the cost per wear down. I am a very practical person. If I am spending this much money on something, I’d better get the cost per wear down. If not, I’d sell it. Yes, you got the coat as a gift, but you probably don’t want it to be sitting in your closet collecting dust.
