Such a fantastic thread. Very helpful for someone like me who is pretty new to designer shopping and don't want to get too crazy. Trying to get a small but well rounded collection.

Catch all: Prada Vitello Daino Pocket hobo bag, black
Everyday favorite: Chanel GST, Red (not purchased yet, but very soon :smile1: )
Instant dresser upper: Chanel classic flap M/L in caviar, black and beige
Office bag: Prada saffiano lux, graphite
Slouchy bag: None (or maybe my prada mini zip-top hobo bag and red wristlet count, they are both small but roomy. Can fit a small wallet, keys, phone and basic makeup.

Can't bear to part with either of the Chanel M/L. love me Chanel.

Catch All: Don't have one yet but I reckon this would be a LV MM Neverfull in Mono.

Everyday: LV Petit Noé in Mono.

Instant Dresser Upper: Chanel - any quilted Chanel with gold hardware! Another one to save for.

Office: LV MM Hampstead in Damier. (I'm an engineer mostly office based and I have the guys ooh-ing and aah-ing over my Hampstead hahaha!)

Slouchy: Balenciaga Mini Pompon.

1) The catch-all-tote: Longchamp le pliage

2) The every-day favourite: LV speedy b 30 (to be acquired soon)

3) The instant "dresser upper": Chanel black flap. Strangely though, I tend to use a $50 brocade clutch from Aldo for most of my evening/formal functions.

4) The office bag: Mulberry bayswater or YSL mini chyc (on wishlist :graucho:)

5) The slouchy one: same as catchall tote

Ok, Here's the Budget Challenge. Using Tashi's Structure, what would be your reccomendations for a new bag collector, with no bag costing over $300?

I may be naive, but I am thinking if i can build a wardrobe of 5\ classic bags that will meet my needs, i'l be able to stop this obsession! Thank you for your suggestions, please!

SuziAck, there's a ton of great stuff in that price range - Coach, Kate Spade, Micheal Kors, Fossil, Frye, Ralph Lauren, Cole Hahn, Badgley Mischka... stuff for every taste. Quality varies, but lots of stuff rivals much more expensive brands. Some of it is seriously underrated.

All of my bags are in the under $300 range new except the Francesco Biasia which is under $500. However, I'm a seriously invested thrift shopper. I could afford these bags new but I like them better when I can buy them gently used for a song. My choices:

The Catch All Tote: Lucky Brand patchwork tote in grey and black

The Every Day Favorite: Frye Brooke small satchel in burnt red

The Instant Dresser-Upper: Informal: vintage Veron red snakeskin convertible clutch or vintage croc-embossed Furla shoulder bag
Formal: Vintage La Regale beaded evening bag with mother of pearl inlay on silver kisslock frame

The Office Bag: Francisco Biasia in black quilted calfskin

The Slouchy Bag: Vintage Fossil hobo in black pebbled leather with British tan accents and braided handle

The Crossbody: Vintage Coach black equestrian zip

Except for the Frye bag, these were all thrifted for less than $10! The Frye was purchase with cash from the sale of a Dior bag I found for $10, so I guess technically it cost me $10 as well.

I realize my hobby is not for everyone - some people just can't get behind carrying a used bag. I teach underprivileged kids - high school age - in a college prep school, and most of them won't be able to afford so much as a $200 bag for quite some time. I did this exercise with "what would I buy if I could only spend $100? or $50?" I'll post the results in the next post - I found some cool bags that I might consider regardless of how much I could afford.

Choices under $100 - lots of great values here!

The Slouchy Bag: Luck Brand Fringe Hobo in rust suede

Choices under $50 - much tougher. I HATE faux leather and tried to stay away from it. I found cool choices in every category except for a structured office bag. The Etienne Agnier is ok but a bit over $50, the Aldo choices are faux leather. Really I would say, buy vintage/used or save up for one of the more structured Fossil or The Sak bags at a slightly higher price point for an office bag. OTOH, I really LOVE the Sherpani painted canvas bags and the Prana Meme satchel - and I'm thinking I might just get one of these as a nice casual choice.

The catch-all-tote: Longchamp Planetes

2) The every-day favourite: still looking...

3) The instant "dresser upper": I use a vintage black clutch with a lapis and coral snap closure clasp...got it for $10 and it goes with everything!!

4) The office bag: Brooks Brothers briefcase or Kate Spade black leather shoulder bag (don't remember the name but it is great for interviews and such)

5) The slouchy one: Cole Haan Archer satchel...such smooshy leather, can wear on the shoulder, arm, or crossbody!! Fits my iPad!!

As I don't work or have children I don't need lots of the categories.

My bags are:

2 mini real crocodile for when I don't need much or a going out

1 across the body mock croc for everyday

1 large bag for days out

But of course I dream of an Hermes...

1) The catch-all-tote: Longchamp Le Pliage

2) The every-day favourite: Perhaps the MBMJ Classic Q Lil Ukita I just ordered!

3) The instant "dresser upper": I have a very nice black Elliott Lucca clutch that I use when I go out. I dunno why, but I just love it!

4) The office bag: Um... don't have one of these. I don't have an office, either. Heh.

5) The slouchy one: Also don't have one of these, but I'm on the hunt!

I really wish I had enough posts to start a new topic but I don't want to go posting random comments just to have enough posts...that would be cheating, haha. I think this topic is a good place for me to get some opinions on what I should do to get the basic bags covered.

Anyway, I have just started a designer collection and started off in a big way by getting an LV Empreinte Speedy in Aurore as well as a matching wallet. Unfortunately, this only goes with maybe 75% of my outfits and so I needed to get at least one more bag that could go w almost everything else (I do have a couple clutches already for formal events). Currently I have a budget of about $2000 that I can use on bags (that's it for the rest of this year) and wanted to get 1 more nice one. What I love about the speedy is it can go with office clothes, casual or dresses (not too dressy of course). So I hope to find 1 more that can go with either casual or work clothes. I know it should be a color that would be fairly neutral, and nothing like the berry color of my Speedy, so if one bag clashes w an outfits' colors, the other should be able to match. (I have an ancient black Ralph Lauren tote that could work in the event that neither bag goes well).

In my search for another bag I went to Miu Miu today and got a big bow bag in Bluette, but now that I'm home I just don't care for it. It's too big for me and even though I like the color, this blue just doesn't do it for me after all...it reminds me too much of dark wash jeans I wear...I figured it would match many things, but it doesn't do much for any of my wardrobe. Tomorrow I plan to exchange it and it was around $1500 so def not over my budget. I am thinking maybe I should get the Lux Shopper instead bc it's not as big, maybe in grey so it would match practically anything. But I also love the Madras bags as well....I am thinking the shopper is better though bc the removable strap makes it so versatile, and Madras may be something that I could get when spring rolls around. One more thought I had would be to get a Christian Dior Panarea tote? For sure that would look nice with office clothes and I see people carry it w jeans as well.

I'm so unsure of what to do. I'm going to head to the mall as soon as they open in the morning (off for Columbus day, yay!) but I just DREAD exchanges and already had to go through this when I was making up my mind with LV; I didn't check out the Speedy until I'd gone around in circles with other bags and I don't want to do the same thing at Miu Miu. I don't know if I should just flat out return this bag and get something around $2,000 (not sure what) or stick to the $1500 range and save some of the money, or just get two bags around 1000 each. The thing is, I love the speedy and I'm sure you all know the feeling of finding a purse that steals your heart. I am hoping to find more that I feel the same way about, but at the same time, I clearly need a good basic bag and so the "wow factor" may not be as important right now. If any of you have any ideas please share if you can and forgive my long winded post please =]

I think you should wait to get another one until you find something else you love as much as the speedy.
