Hi All,

I've been perusing the forum for advice on what bag I should get for my girlfriend for Valentine's Day and this seemed like the most appropriate thread.
She has quite a few bags:
-Balenciaga
-Chanel: Boy, Wallet on Chain, Jumbo (on Chain?), Lambskin Clutch on Chain, Tote/Shopping Bag.
-LV: Speedy, Tote, Luggage (Roller)
-Alexander Wang: Rocco
-Marc Jacobs: Cross Body Little Quilted Stam, Shoulder Bag
-Mulberry: Alexa
-Prada: Saffiano Lux Tote
-Burberry: Tote
-Probably a couple more that I'm missing.

She is not a fan of Tory Burch, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors.

I've been desperately searching for a bag without any luck.
I'm looking for a bag around the $1,000 range. I'll be willing to spend a little extra if it was worth it.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks so much in advance!

How about a LV Epi Alma?

My must have list is something like this:
1. Work bag
2. Laptop Bag
3. Weekend bag -- uber practical, easy to carry
4. Go anywhere bag: looks polished enough for work, but can still work with jeans and casual wear.
5. The travel bag/carry-on/go to the beach
6. The fun bag, in a fun color or shape. When you need to add some visual interest.
7. The evening bag
8. The bag that can be used and you don't care what happens to
9. The everyday clutch
10. The mini wallet, for just the essentials
11. The go to wallet that holds everything

I am trying to purge/buy to get my list together. I am still hunting for an absolutely perfect work bag. I think I have finally refined what I need to fit in my work bag. I have plenty of impostors, that are almost right but not quite.

I recently realized that I’d been accumulating too many bags of the same style/color/shape and wasn’t getting maximum use out of anything. I decided to stop buying random bags and invest in a few good pieces that would be able to carry me through every occasion. I wanted to have a diverse, versatile, and usable collection. In the end, I came up with a list of 5 essential bag types. For any of you considering purging your collection or looking for advice on how to build a collection without accumulating 20 purses you don’t use well, I hope this is helpful!

Note: The bag suggestions I made are based on personal preference and what I’m aware of out there. Feel free to add to the list or make suggestions about adjustments to this!

Building Your Collection: The 5 Bags Every Girl Needs

  • The Catch-All Tote
Every girl needs one of these carry-all totes for the beach, travel, shopping, or books. While extremely useful, they don’t have to be utilitarian! Totes often come in fun colors and patterns and because they’re so big, they’re capable of immediately sprucing up an otherwise drab outfit.
What to Look For: To get the most use out of your tote, look for one that it large enough for you to be able to throw in any and all miscellaneous items (for me, it absolutely MUST fit my laptop and still have room for at least a few books). It should also have long enough straps that you can carry it on your shoulder and hands-free while running errands.
Suggestions: Goyard St. Louis, Louis Vuitton Neverfull, Longchamp Le Pliage (long handles)

  • The Everyday Favorite
This is the bag that you automatically reach for every morning on your way out the door. Because this is something you’ll be using a lot, make sure it goes with your wardrobe and is large enough to fit all your everyday needs (cell phone, wallet, make-up bag, etc). Of all the bags in your collection, this is the one that should scream personality. It’s all about YOU and your style.
What to Look For: Look for a bag that is versatile enough to be worn with most of your closet, as well as something that is easy to use and carry. For me, this means detachable shoulder straps! Also pick something that is classy enough for nicer daytime events or casual dinners (for example, a last minute lunch downtown with friends). You’ll get the most use out of this bag if it’s day-to-evening. I actually have two bags that I consider my ‘everyday favorites’ but between the two, I have my whole wardrobe pretty much covered: one dark gray satchel with silver hardware, and one brown Boston bag with gold hardware.
Suggestions: Balenciaga City/Part-Time/Work, Louis Vuitton Speedy, Chanel GST or Jumbo Flap, Rebecca Minkoff MAB, Mulberry Alexa, Proenza Schouler PS1, Gucci Jackie

  • The “Instant Dresser-Upper”
This bag is your go-to for nights out on the town, receptions, nice dinners, and special events. Whether it’s a clutch or small purse, these bags are capable of instantly dressing up any outfit.
What to Look For: You want something relatively small since all you need to be able to fit in here are your phone, a small wallet, keys, and lipstick. Depending on your style, your purse can be leather, exotic, rhinestone-covered, studded or patent. I’ve never been much of a clutch person (prefer cross-body and shoulder purses) but for those of you that don’t mind not having handles/straps, clutches look lovely and chic.
Suggestions: Rebecca Minkoff MAC, Chanel M/L or Small Flap, Judith Lieber Clutch, Lauren Merkin Clutch, Fendi Baguette

  • The Office Bag
Every girl needs one bag that’s office appropriate: not too flashy or conspicuous but elegant, refined, and understated (if you work in the fashion industry, disregard!).
What to Look For: You want a bag with clean lines and at least a little bit of structure. Avoid conspicuous logos, monograms, tassels, flashy hardware, patterns, and distracting colors.
Suggestions: YSL Muse, Bottega Veneta Campana, Mulberry Bayswater

  • The Slouchy Bag
This is the bag you reach for on lazy, comfy, casual days. It’s buttery soft and slings right over your shoulder making it the perfect companion for a quick trip out to the grocery store.
What to Look For: A hobo with a wide opening (so it’s easier to use) and roomy strap that sits comfortable on your shoulder. The softer the leather, the better the bag will fall, so look for leather you love.
Suggestions: Balenciaga Day, Bottega Veneta Hobo, Marc by Marc Jacobs Faridah Hobo, Rebecca Minkoff Nikki
this is so perfect!! Who needs 5 million useless purses, when all you need are these essential 5?

Catch all tote- Celine Phantom black (purchasing this very soon!)

Everyday favorite- Louis Vuitton mono Galliera pm. so comfortable and easy!

Dresser upper- a Chanel flap will one day fill this void! Until then I use my LV pochette or Rebecca Minkoff mini mac. I'm also considering a YSL belle de jour clutch and a prada clutch here...

Office bag- YSL mini Cabas Chyc in black. This is my more professional and classic bag

Slouchy bag- Alexander Wang Rockie in black. This is my casual and relaxed bag that I often throw on the shoulder. Since I carry it on the shoulder so often it's starting to slouch so I guess it now qualifies as a slouchy bag? LOL

Interesting to see what every woman considers a perfect collection :)

I like to categorize what I need in bags by essential silhouettes. Need a great tote, to be carried alone - or when I am in big cities to use with my bag (usually a messenger). I really adore totes that have those hidden D rings where a cross body strap can be attached when you are just so sick of carrying it for 39 MORE city blocks (but it is unobtrusive)!!! Have to have a comfortable, well styled mid sized luxe messenger bag (the Evelyne is probably the most perfect - the one with the pocket on the outside). Have to have a satchel (and I look for shapes that are timely (current), or just plain classic "forever" like a speedy - not an "eared" Celine knockoff satchel). Must own a one strap hobo bag that feels like it's part of my body. Needs to be made of thick, chewy leather with great handbag maker details (hand stitch, chic strap attachment details). I like to have one nylon bag (i.e. Prada) that is my "workhorse in the rain"...but still must be chic and sleek. And, I am happy when the nylon bag can be hand held, shoulder, AND cross body so it is my truly utilitarian bag. Bags I need to own are day to nite bags...usually smaller, with a little more detail (could be the hardware, the color choices, maybe some quiet tonal sparkle. Can be worn cross body with a chain, or the chain tucked in, and it becomes a chic hand held - also some very small satchels fills this bill too..hand carried or cross body (bendel's does a good job of making these really small silhouettes, but still must be useful day to night bags!). And, my wallet very often works as a mini clutch - I am picky with the details on the clutch so it will have to be versatile for multi use (not just a piece of leather slapped on with a zip around)- and I like to get compliments - so being attentive to leather design details is super important to me. WHEW!

I LOVE this thread! So useful and interesting to see everyone's personal style. Here's mine:

1. Catch all tote - Longchamp Le Pliage with short handle. I think the short handle looks more classy as opposed to the long one being more casual.

2. Everyday favorite - My Balenciage City. I dress very casual and this bag adds a flair of casual chic to my outfits.

3. Dresser upper - Chanel WOC or flap. It pairs nicely with super casual or dressy. You can't go wrong with Chanel!

4. Office bag - My current job is very casual so I use my Balenciaga City or Modalu Pippa everyday.

5. Slouchy bag - My slouchy bag is the same as my everyday favorite and catch all tote: Balenciaga City/Work and Longchamp Le Pliage. Both are super casual everyday bags and the leather on my Balenciagas are super lusciously soft!

As you can see, I tend to only stick to a few brands and styles that work for my wardrobe. I've ventured out and tried other brands such as Marc Jacobs, Coach, LV, Dior, Chloe, Mulberry, Gucci and Fendi just to name a few...but always come back to my trusted top 3 brands that never fail me.

The key is to find and know your personal style. It helps narrow down handbag choices.

What a great thread! Thought I'd revive it and share my essentials. :smile1:

-Catch-all tote: Longchamp Le Pliage Tote
-Everyday favorite / Slouchy bag: Foley + Corinna Lady City Tote, Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Natasha
-Dresser-upper: Michael Kors Hamilton Saffiano E/W Satchel
-Office bag: Michael Kors Jet Set Top-Zip Saffiano Tote

I consider these my must-have types of bags:
-A tote suitable for everyday and office use
-A dressy satchel or shoulder bag for occasions (clutches are too small for me)
-A medium to large sized crossbody bag for shopping, travel, etc.
-A smaller crossbody bag for errands and short trips
-A fun but practical statement bag

I chose two bags for each category (I couldn't choose just one!) plus I replaced the Office Bag with a Fun Bag since I am semi-retired and work from home. :)

Catch-All Tote: Hermès All Leather Garden Party (Cassis, Brown)

Everyday Favorite: Hermès Picotin (Orange, Red)

Instant Dresser-Upper: Chanel Lambskin Mini 14S (Fuchsia) / Chanel Vintage Kelly (White)

Fun Bag: Bottega Veneta Vintage Mini Fringe (Black) / Balenciaga First (Cornflower)

Slouchy Bag: Chanel Hobo Tassel (Black) / Balenciaga Day (Rose Bruyere)

I had to do two in each category as well...was too hard to just do one in each! :p

Catch-All Tote: Longchamp Le Pliage and Linea Pelle Dylan Medium Tote
Everyday Favorite: Rebecca Minkoff MAM and Chloe Paraty
Instant Dresser-Upper: Ferragamo Sofia and MJ Blake
Office Bag: MK Hamilton and Coach Candace
Slouchy Bag: RM Nikki and Kooba Parker

What a great list. For me, I see the must-have in this way:
  1. The small hands-free cross-body errand bag
    Mostly smaller crossy-body styles.
    I currently have:
    • Bal Mini City
    • MbMJ Karlie
    • KS Dot Noel Thomas swing pack
I love these types of bags and are always looking for better ones that suit my needs, currently eyeing the Frye small cameron
  2. The casual everyday bag
The more slouchy bags, or hobos, larger cross-body
    • Bal City
    • MbMJ Hillier
  3. The feminine everyday bag
Mostly satchels and shoulder bag styles
    I currently have:
    • Chloe Paraty
Generally speaking, I find satchels, especially more structured ones, to be nice under this feminine everyday bag category and falls closely in line with the office bags depending on the need for carrying size.
  4. The instant dresser upper
Mostly small shoulder bags with chains, clutches
    I currently have:
    • MbMJ Karlie
    • Ferragamo Saffiano icona clasp clutch/wallet
Still searching for the perfect one - really liking the LV Sobe in the epi or the Eva in the damier azur
  5. Catch-all tote
    Totes, travel bag/weekenders style
I don't really have a good one right now and I'm still looking - so far I'm just a yellow no-name one I love. a longchamp le pliage expandable travel tote, and a big buddha hobo that's catching it all. I'm considering the MK Saffianos.

And If needed....and not already covered by your feminine structure bags...
  6. Formal good for Office Bag
I personally have no need for one - but if I did, Mulberry Bayswater, LV Capucine, Givenchy Antigona, Knomo bags would be good contenders

Two in each category (one neutral/easy to match, one bright/fun) means no more than 10 bags - what a great way to ensure your collection is tight and well-rounded!
