This gets into a shady, gray area of where do you draw the line? Today when someone self-identifies their gender, everyone is expected to accept it. That would have been unthinkable 20 years ago. This woman self-identifies as being indigenous and it’s a problem. Who is to say that in another 20 years it won’t be accepted as well?
The shady part is saying you’re from another country, another race.. and profiting off of it for years. She doubled down numerous times. If she had said she was an American Indian from Boston I doubt it would have been discovered. She tapped into trauma here and personally I’m glad it was exposed.

Things like this make me realize I'm old. I have no idea this person existed. :P

Not knowing who she is probably means you are younger than you think. :P

Definitely! The heyday of her celebrity as a singer-songwriter was in the 1960s and '70s. For about 5 years she was on Sesame Street regularly talking about what it means to be an American Indian. :P After that she made a career as an Indian folksinger and activist.

What's shocking is how she threatened members of her family to prevent them from exposing her as an Italian-American kid from Massachusetts, and how they lived in fear of her.
