Im not a tourist and I went into the diamond district alone searching for diamond hoops.. It was god awful experience. I wish I could tell you where exactly to go! I can't
Way too many scammers, pressuring you to buy, telling you it's a great deal ( the diamonds were tinged yellow, super cloudy, over priced) I left empty handed
I don't think Macy's has great diamonds. I've never seen any and I've looked. I think lord and Taylor has better but not that much better than Macy's.
The big department stores will have a fine jewelry section --- Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales (for NYC). I would recommend you check out their websites to familiarize yourself with the availability and pricing. Items do go on sale; and not all merchandise is on the website. Another seller with online presence is Diamonds by Lauren. They have a website as well. You may request your particular choice stone and can even arrange to visit their office for personal viewing before buying in NYC. I believe colored diamonds are their forte although they are able to source other gems as well.

Our local Neiman Marcus in the DC area has a section with estate jewelry. It is likely present as well in the Neiman Marcus Copley Place location.

Thank you both, fab advice!
I'd also recommend I.D Jewelry, based at 15 W 47th St #305, New York, NY 10036, United States.

I have bought several times from them via the Internet and have been delighted with their prices and products. Email ahead and tell them what you are looking for and your budget and they will be sure to have something for you.
I also have friends who are US and Canada based who have been there in person and have had wonderful treatment. I always deal with Luanne. Yekutiel is the owner, I believe.

Good luck and happy shopping.

I would buy something at Tiffany's if I were you. Even if it were in the sterling silver line. There is nothing as iconically New York as that. Macy's jewelry isn't that great. Neiman's is a Texas based retailer which would be great if you were visiting me in Dallas. What about something from a designer based in N.Y? David Yurman started in New York. Alexis Bittar had a whimsical start selling out of Brooklyn. New York is so much fun. Have fun!
