Okay I don't want to ruin this thread because I did open a whole can of worms... If you want genuine made in XXX leather goods, always go for indie or small brands. My fav is Corter Leather - their Youtube video where they tried to make a $5,000 Hermes wallet went viral. I mean of course the craftmanship is far from Hermes standards but still... Although it seems that they only make SLGs.

Love this! I don't know how this can't be just as good as Hermes - they hand-craft their stuff too!

Not to be a debbie downer but he sells his own regular leather wallets for 100$. A cites certified alligator hide can cost from 800 to 4500 USD depending on quality but since Hermes owns their own tanneries it would be less. e.g. ( http://store.rojeleather.com/american-alligator-belly-black-classic-glazed/ ) If you select only the best / largest scales of the hide you are already way above his estimate (At least 150 to 400USD in materials). Moreover he didn't account for his time, cost of tools or any of the fixed costs of running his business. Let's be honest, what he did was vastly underestimate the cost in order to make a viral video thereby generating a huge interest in his business. Also note that he doesn't sell any exotics on his website!

One thing to note is you can definitely make a cheaper alligator mississippiensis wallet if you opt out of a cites certified leather or use a part of the hide that has a mix of small and large scales. You can probably get a very nice wallet for 500 USD but that's still far more than his 70.

These makers have in-house design teams, use premium quality leathers, and pay their skilled artisans a living wage in countries with a high standard of living. All these factors make for expensive bags.
