Hi I am a 16 year old boy, 6’ 1’’, athletic and muscular but not too big. I am planning on buying my first birkin and can’t decide whether a 35 or 40 would fit my frame best. I want to use it as a bag to go to town with or take on as a carry on when flying but don’t carry a ton of stuff. Thanks

Hi There,
I'm the same height as you are. And had to made the same decision. I went for a 40 but sold it and replaced it with a 35 because it holds everything I need (macbook, agenda etc). The 40 is great for travels but to big for everyday and work on the go. Since I wear mine always open and relaxed I find it perfect.

I used to think that a mans bag had to be big but, in fact the most important thing really is, what am I going to use it for. If you're just gonna carry a few things around go for the 35. Your body frame would be okay with it. I've had both and a 35 is a perfect day and "informal" night transition bag for a guy. Look at the thread here for guys modeling their Hermes and you'll get a better visual.

This is my first post here, although I've been reading around the forums for a while now, but I'm not finding the answers I need so here we go.

I've been debating between a 35 and 40 birkin for a month now and I'm not sure which would look most proportional for me. I'm about 178cm (or 5'10") and around 135lbs. I primarily want to use it as a school/work bag and would need to carry around my 13" macbook pro in a 14" or so sleeve and maybe some papers and folders. I'm not super concerned about weight, mostly about overall size. Most pictures I've seen have been for 40cm birkins which always look great, but I have a feeling it might be too big on me for an every day kind of bag. Any birkin experts have any tips or recommendations? Or do any guys around my size have any pics of the bag?

Thanks in advance!

If your laptop sleeve is 14", it won't fit in the 35. I cannot get my old 14" MacBook Pro to fit in my 35 (without a cover). I haven't really tried putting it diagonally. But that doesn't count as fitting in my mind.

I think the smaller MacBook such as yours can fit in the 35 without a cover.

Hello there! Welcome to TPF! The birkin is a great bag for a guy. 35 or 40 both work but I agree a that you may need a 40 to fit all the items you listed. However, I would never recommend a birkin for everyday/school use. Firstly, for me personally, I don't want to risk any damage to my birkin and I feel having too much weight from papers, folders, and a laptop will definitely put a strain on the bag. Some folks do it, and most of the time its fine since the birkin is super durable and well made, but for me personally, I wouldn't want to use my bag for that, especially with the cost of it haha. I actually recommend the other models which I think fits more and is lighter for daily use. I use the Victoria and its a beautiful bag that has proven to be very efficient for me.

What I notice when I put my school books, folders or laptop is that it sorta bends the base of the bag across the middle horizontally due to weight and leaves an indentation on the interior which bothers me.

Birkin 35 and 40 are very heavy bags because they are leather lined and just really well made, and putting in more stuff will make it VERY heavy especially as a top handle. The perk of the victoria is that you can wear it on the shoulder, plus its much lighter since it is fabric lined. I have a 30 since I am shorter, 5'7", plus I wanted a smaller top handle bag for more planned outfit days like brunch or fun in the city, weekend stuff.

But also, go with what your heart desires! If you are dreaming of having a 40 to use and love everyday definitely go for it! The birkin is really a great bag!

That's really good to know, thanks! Fitting the laptop in is definitely one of my primary concerns since I already made the mistake of buying a backpack from another brand that's supposed to fit a 13inch, yet it doesn't .

That's a good point, I definitely don't want to ruin it. Aside from my laptop the rest of what I carry in terms of papers and folders aren't particularly heavy or robust, so I guess the only worry would be the laptop adding strain to the bag. I guess realistically I could get the 40 for weekend use and travel and one of the briefcase styled bags for school and work. But would you say that the 40 is exceptionally larger than the 35? I've been having issues finding good comparison pics since I don't know if I'd want to be carrying around a massive bag frequently. Although I guess if I'm lucky I can pick up both over time and not worry about size differences lol.

I'd say there is quite a size difference. Although for weekends and travel you can get away with a 35. I've handled a 35 and 40 before and seen them on people out and about and there is definitely a significant difference. The 40 is a big guy haha.

Also, there are LOTS of modeling shots in this thread. I'd say take some time and go through the thread, you may find a good visual on how the 40 and 35 look.

I've been scrolling through that thread for a couple days and there are definitely some good shots. I think I'm just being thrown off by some fashion bloggers who have 40s and somehow make them look a lot smaller. I definitely love the 35, just not sure if it'll perform all the tasks I want it to. Maybe I'll try to see if an SA at my local store will have anything for size comparison in regards to my proportions, although they gave bad vibes the last time I was there so we'll see how that goes.
