Ask yourself, do you really need to comment rather than just make a mental note for yourself?

IMO, if a fellow H customer or SA says "what a beautiful bag!" inside and Hermes store, it's a compliment in a safe space, same at a function where there are friends of friends.

If the same happened walking down the road or in supermarket, it would make me question the compliment-giver's motivation. Not always (humans can usually tell what's meant by the way it's said) but there are some strange people out there, not to mention, it's the number one way trained hard-sellers get an in to people's attention/time including in-store reps and people who pull you in to miracle skincare stores.

Oh yes.

Stranger encounters have to be managed these days, this is just reality. This is a time of heightened danger of theft or other abuse committed on the street, even in trafficked and pricey environments. Discretion is almost always the better path. As in, mind your boundaries.

You are right, but is sad that we have to think that way.

MY DH loves cars, so here's what I'd say (and have said) when I see a guy with a great car: "My husband loves cars, I know he'd love THAT, it's really nice!" That way, it's a compliment and he knows I'm married and just want to say he has a nice car. Just do the reverse about a bag.

THIS! Yes, I love this idea! Thanks, I'll definitely give this one a try.

And for others who have mentioned it. Cultural context is indeed important. I'm in the South, so it's not as weird when people talk to you in public as it may be in other places in the US.

Exactly, and I live in the Midwest. I would not do the same on a street in Paris. I would just admire in silence.
