I know from Friends that Furla and Liebeskind are great.
My Fossil bags were also always perfect. My first bag from the is 7 years old and looks like new.
I also often hear DKNY's quality is superb for the price and the leather is supposedly very nice.

Small MCM bags are under or around 500 and their leather, hardware and quality is better than most contemporary designers. They are considered a premiere brand in Germany, but their prices aren't sky high (yet).

Furla and Kate Spades!
I have a Furla from 10 years ago which I used extensively. I Did not baby it at all. It's still in pretty Good condition.
Another Kate spade I have from 6 or 7 years ago , is still working Great. I use it to carry my toddler's stuff around now.

Henri Bendel! Most under-rated bag.

Thank you for giving me an excuse to show off the bag I bought on eBay this afternoon, the Carlyle satchel in yellow caviar leather.

You are right. These are underrated - and overlooked.

easy, dooney Bourke, super well made, never fall apart, where as my Rebecca Minkoff 500$ bag looks bad after 2o or so uses, corner wear, rub etc. I have LV bags that get nasty inside, I love Longchamp too, but the leather ones are over 500$ mostly. Dooney wears geat

Like many others, Longchamp is really nice, the nylon is sturdy and thicker than most, canvas is rustic and durable and the leather is SO soft. Coach is a classic. Kate Spade's designs are really youthful but their leather is soft and rather thick. My mother loves her Dooney and Bourke tote.

Michael Kors - I have only few items so far but I feel they are absolutely as good or better quality as my LV. Better than my Coach, Kate Spade or LAMB items which are in the same price range $250-$300).

I agree that Henri Bendel has some great bags. They have sales fairly often that make them even more appealing. I have a leather bag and I would compare the softness and quality of the stitching to my Chanel! I don't like all their bags, but it's worth a look.

Michael Kors is fair bet, especially with his secondary Michael Michael Kors line. I'm not thrilled that many of his bags are made in China but I have several that I use on a daily basis and they've held up well against the rain + humidity here in Florida.
