I don't know how much you plan to pay in cash, but if it is a large amount I wouldn't carry that much cash around. I think it would be simple to just pay a portion with your credit card & the balance using your debit card.

Ditto on the Amex! They are the best with these types of purchases but make sure you call in advance and let them know. Or you can split it amongst credit cards debating on what kind of reward you want.

For big purchases sometimes it's best to use credit card to get the points and airline tickets or cash back or whatever it is. The only time I wouldn't is if they offer a discount with cash.

In the UK we pay on our Debit card which comes straighnt out of our bank account where the money is sitting, we use our debit cards for everything here, when I purchased my Love bangle I just paid straight out of my bank account with my debit card.

^I don't know if a US debit card would decline if someone tried to make a 20k purchase, but that may be the way to go OP if you call your bank first and find out.

I've had it where Ive gone to make a large transaction & they have had to phone up for verification & they normally ask to speak to me & they usually ask some security questions that are already set up on my account & only I would know & then once this is done the payment usually goes through with no problems, do US banks do this too, it would be too much hassle to do wire transfers & everything that's been mentioned on this post, Ive only ever known of debit or credit card transactions & of course cash but no one wants to carry large amounts of cash.

I'm not 100% sure, since I've never needed to spend so much money on anything yet, but I've seen people come into stores that I've worked in and tried to use their debit cards for large transactions and it's been denied. Like I said, OP should call her bank first and find out if they'd let such a large purchase go through. Much easier than carrying cash, although honestly, if the cash is in 100 dollar bills and it's taken out right before visiting the store, it wouldn't bother me much. It's a pain in the @ss for an employee to count (the most I've had to count is over 4k in cash, it doesn't take long, but it's still a pain) just to make sure it's all there, then probably have another employee come and count it just to make sure all of the $ is there, but if there's no other way to pay w/o a CC being declined due to such a large purchase, then there's no other way.

When I got my e-ring (around 20k), we put it on our amex. If you have a plat charge card, there is no limit. If not, call ahead and they can often up your limit. Plus you get protection of up to about 50K if you loose it etc for 6 months (i think, not 100% sure on the details).

When we bought my upgraded ering from Tiffany, we split the purchase over three different credit cards to get the maximum reward points and then just paid off all the cards immediately with online payments from our shared checking account. It was nice to save almost 3% with the cash back rewards! The SAs weren't fazed at all and seemed like they did this kind of thing every day. Good luck with your purchase!

You should be able to do it all on your debit card. Just call the bank and have them on the phone while you check out, instead of having it declined and then calling to have them approve it (which happened to us once).
