I have a Black bag which I would like to touch up a bit. HA - one would think that I've done this before, and I have .. but I cannot for the life of me remember what leather "touch-up" option I used and as this is Chevre (the other is Calfskin), I would like to make sure that I use something that will not only work, but not destroy those precious leathers!!

THANKS ALL!!!

I use Vernis edge paint and Zelikovitz satin finish top coat.

Depending on how severe / what area I tend to like creams for light restoring and a bit of color refreshing - faves are Tarrago and Saphir. I’ve used both of these on chèvre / agneau before. Prob also on calfskin, just not Bal (as I only have 2 and they’re newer).

Post-buffing of creams, if some more surface protection is needed I’m w/ Muchstuff on the Zeli topcoat. I keep it in satin and matte just in case!

I’ve also used Angelus leather paint to touch up vintage Lady Dior bags, but I’m generally hesitant on true *paint* so I tend to reserve using it for cases where the leather color that needs TLC is more opaque / surface or when I’m fixing edging (vs the actual body) of a bag. That said, if you ever have to precisely match a [non-black] color, Angelus has a fab selection to choose from for mixing.

Thanks so much!!! It’s for some small spots on an older Calfskin bag, if that helps!!!

Any thoughts on Meltonian black cream for general fading and also corner/edge touchups from fading/rubbing? Would it be advisable to apply Zelikovitz satin finish top coat after the collared creams regardless? Is the effect of the top coat obvious? Like shiny etc?

Also any tips to prevent color transfers after coloured creams? I read that some people just spray a waterproofer like apple guard.

kerryisntreal - You mean the Saphir MDO coloured creams right? Any experience with the Saphir MDO Renovateur?

Muchstuff - you use Zelikovitz satin finish top coat all over the bag after painting it?

I've used Meltonian but lately my preference has been Tarrago or Saphir primarily because of the smell (meltonian is stronger). I find the colors for T and S to be easier to match for use on brighter colored bags. If you're just working w black anything should be fine.

Buffing out the cream usually takes care of the shine, but you *could* use topcoat on top of it if you want - heads up it'll likely pull up some of the (even dry) cream color tho. I use it more for edges.

For Saphir I primarily use the Crème Surfine line. I havent used the renovateur, but I have used reptan (on croc and python) and pate de luxe. I'd feel comfortable trying any of their stuff, it all seems high quality.

I've never had any problem with for transfer with creams. You just really need to buff it well afterwards.

I've only painted an entire bag once and I prefer not to do so. I use the Zeli on corners and edges after I've painted or used shoe cream on them. I find the satin finish is still too shiny, @kerryisntreal has recommended the Zeli flat for me.

Ah ok so you use the Saphir Creme Surfine from the Beaute De Cuir line. I was considering the Pommadier Cream Shoe Polish for “coloring”.

I had purchased Meltonian but I read it has petroleum? And Saphir is all natural. Eg the Renovateur has mink oil, beeswax and lanolin

What is the difference in usage between the Pate deluxe (shoe wax) and the Creme Surfine/ Pommadier Cream Shoe Polish? Seems very similar.

Stupid question but to confirm “buffing” is just rubbing a cloth in a quick left to right motion right? I’m still trying to figure out what to use to apply moisturiser/color polish.. some say rags, others say a term cloth type thing, some buy special cloths. Pretty confusing. In the past I just used a plain old microfibre cloth to apply colonil gel in circular motions (not using that anymore) but never buffed.

Wow the top coat will actually remove the cream? Doesn’t sound good. Then it would result in patchiness, no? But would be a good idea just to do the edges

I have seen kerryisntreal’s dye thread... wouldn’t have the courage... plus I suppose it must change the texture too.

How do you find the Zeli flat? Is it this one? https://www.zelistore.com/products/zeli-professional-topcoat-flat-finish-32-oz-18-2275-03

Do you happen to have a comparison of the effect of the Zeli satin vs flat?

I haven’t bought the flat yet, perhaps @kerryisntreal can help with that.

Pate de luxe I just used on an exotic bag that needed some more intense shine. I was more mentioning it as an example of a Saphir product I've used, I don't know if I'd use it on a regular balenciaga bag.

And yeah that's basically buffing! You can also use a brush if you want, but I find I have more control with a cloth. I also apply creams with a cloth. Buffing is 100% essential for polishes like meltonian etc. I'll look for a before [during] & after pic to show you what I mean.

I wouldn't say the top coat "removes" the cream per se, but you basically have one finish interacting with another wet finish and things happen, some of it is pulled up. Just something to be aware of!

Don't have a Zeli comparison offhand but can try to drum one up. Currently spending quarantine with family so don't have all my supplies at hand!

When I'm back I'll also snap pics of that dyed black bag. I actually ended up taking off the original handles to switch them out with ones from another beat up bag I cannibalized, but stalled on getting hardware to finish! Good reminder to finish that to bring it back to the world of the carried :)

Do you have any preference for what kind of cloth you use to apply creams and for buffing? or a plain old rag would do?

Re Zeli... but if you wait for the cream or lotion to dry it shouldn’t be a problem?

Thanks so much! Are you in the States?

Oh wow, you’re really brave!!! Glad that i gave you a little nudge to finish the project!!

I paint on leather often and always use Angelus Brand paint. It's meant for shoes and leather so it can bend/fold without cracking the way that normal acrylic paint would. Huge selection if you need to mix colors. I use it on bags, jackets, restoring pieces, you name it. I also prep it with their deglazer so the paint sticks. I've tried other paints but this is my fav. Would recommend! It can withstand loads of wear as well. The painting on my profile photo was done years ago and looks the same as the day I painted it.
