Being "on trend".. Why??

I haven’t changed. I still feel like if a bag, shoes, clothing, et cetera fits someone’s overall style, they won’t look dated. I still remember that lady with the Paddington. Lo and behold, that bag is back.

It has always been curious to me why anyone cares about the thoughts and opinions of strangers.

I was feeling the Paddington before I knew it was a 'thing' again. It's those times when I'm so happy I don't follow the heard and like (and keep) what I like.

It can (not) work the other way too. I have a cousin who's a primary school teacher. All her clothes are more than 10 years old, all inexpensive high-street. She complains she feels out of step and 'frumpy' (her word). Not enough to take my offer and go shopping with her. When people leave things a while, perhaps they don't feel great about themselves anyway, it's not always a case of personal style but more getting stuck. It can make them feel quite disconnected. I tried to get her a nice silk scarf (not luxury) but she told me she had no idea of how and when to wear it and gave it to me back determinedly to return it.

I don’t like buying bags or clothing that is super hyped, as sometimes I don’t know if I really like an item or if I got swept into the trend. These items can look outdated quickly so want to be sure I’d like an item once the trend is over and for years to come.

I do dabble in trends but it’s usually a little after the trend has died down, it’s sometimes fun to, I didn’t have the money when I was younger so it makes me feel young sometimes.

Trends cycle so quickly now due to influencers that it would give one whiplash to follow them.

Side note: I’d bet a LOT of the current trend of influencers selling their collections is a reflection that they purchased using credit or funds they didn’t really have to spend and now those chickens are coming home to roost. Quite a bit of this is likely a need to sell and not a want.
Yes. The influencers are always selling their bags. They either need the space or money to make room for new bags. I do watch videos for thorough bag reviews on bags I’m considering for purchase. Several brands and bags from popular brands aren’t popular on here but are elsewhere.

I am so glad there was no such thing as social media when I was younger...it would have bankrupted me trying to keep up with trends!

Fortunately now as an "elder stateswoman", like others have commented, I just wear what I like. I do find trends subconsciously influence what I feel looks good clothing-wise, but since I only wear either thrift or good quality affordable basics, it's easy to dress current...maybe not particularly "on trend" but also not like I'm stuck in a rut like @papertiger 's friend. (Side note: if you are over 50 and still wearing fitted capris with loose brightly patterned hip-length tops - PLEASE STOP!!!)

But for big ticket items like luxury bags or jewelry, I'm sticking to the classics.

some bought bags that were simply not suitable for their lifestyle, that much is obvious. After they got likes and clicks all that remains is to sell them.

I agree with this, I suspect most folks who are debating on buying something due to worries about whether a bag will look dated are really just trying to evaluate if their current appreciation of the bag will last, or if in fact they just think it looks good right now. I debate that myself from time to time.

And of course as I’ve gotten older, I’m getting better at figuring out if a new trend suits my style - in which case I might hop on it right away, or if I wait on it / ignore it.
