I never understand why buying a bag that is "on trend" is so important. Or why people won't buy a bag they think looks dated, even if they love it. Ok I can understand it if the person intends to resell the bag at some point. But what if you have no intention of reselling? Some of these bags cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. If I'm going to spend a lot of money I want something that will last for years. And years. Any bag can look great with the right outfit.
I guess I am really asking why someone would refuse to use a bag that is no longer popular.
Do you think wearing a bag that is "in" or "out" is important?

Buying a trendy bag can be fun.... But only if it doesn't cost you an arm as we say in French...
i didn't buy the lovely Fendi Spy or the gorgeous Chloé Paddington when they came out because they were too expensive for me at the time.
Had they been affordable , I might have taken the plunge...;)

Good question! If I didn’t voluntarily hop into the slightly skewed handbag community, I don’t think “on trend” would matter. And too...how on trend? From this year, three years ago, five? Big, small, micro? How outdated do they look when they’re “out,” and how much out can I live with?
I just returned from a small vacation to several European cities and I noticed so many LV Mono and DE Bags, and Gucci’s from every generation I can remember, and that’s a lot. It made me :) watching these patina’d and rumpled mostly shoulder bags, looking more chic for their age. And that’s not to say they looked quaint. They looked current and great and not really distinguishable from one another. It says something about the wearer also… something confident and solid. Back home, though, I can question myself on how one of my older bags looks on me. Can it still be pulled off? So that goes for my old and slightly older Coach bags, still in great condition, my Hermès Trims, my amazing Cole Haans pre 2010 and more. I do wear them but I’ve also internalized the handbag community’s eye for how they look vs. today’s trend, which goes hand-in-hand with the fashion world’s constant churning. So I know I place less value on my older bags, although again, I keep each one because it is beautiful/handsome to me or super functional where I need it. Some are trendy, some are classic. Except for the fun of getting a new bag, I’m set for life with my bag wardrobe. But can I accept that simple fact and love what I have? Frankly, I think probably not as long as I use the greater handbag community as a reference point. And here I am :)

Unless you "hang" with people who are in the fashion biz or are very affluent and into fashion, I don't really think it matters. With the exception of SAs at stores where designer bags are sold, most people I associate with don't know what bags are current (or not). So the last few bags I've purchased were ones I liked years ago and didn't get back then. Got them for a fraction of the price now.
The bag I'm carrying for the last week or so is an old Prada. I got it a few years ago from a lovely PF member. I suppose it's dated but it "fits" me better than a saffiano tote.

I once stopped seeing a hairdresser who I had been going to for years because she refused to cut my hair as short as I wanted it because it wasn't "on trend". I've never given a thought to whether or not something is currently popular. I do what works for me.
that's unusual......I could see her giving you her opinion but refusing to do what you want? that's crazy

my hairdresser one time advised me not to cut my hair shorter - that I would regret it. I valued her opinion so I followed her suggestion. that's different from your situation where you knew what you wanted and weren't asking her opinion

I had a similar situation! My hair dresser refused to buzz my sides even though I totally wanted her to do it. Never went back.

Sorry to hijack .

If you bought one, would you use it today if you still loved it?
