Hello,
I need some help! I've only ever worn fashion jewellery from the high street and I have decided to move on to proper jewellery and I don't know where to start with my new collection? Earrings, bracelets, necklaces..what's your recommendations and what's your top buys? I like tiffanys..

My preference is not buying designer. I like the staples personally then I'd buy fun designer pieces.
For me personally, I like my diamond studs everyday. In order of importance for me personally not including my wedding ring {and this is very personal. What we like you may not. . . }:
- diamond studs
- watch
- diamond initial necklace {my kids all share same initial}
- tennis bracelet

Yeah, I agree with Swanky for diamond studs! So versatile and classic but if you don't like them/like them on then maybe pearls or some other kind of studs. I have two diamond necklaces that I alternate between that I love as well. I'm partial to diamonds too because they're my birthstone and they go with everything. Maybe if you post some pictures of your favorite jewelry you already have we can point you towards pieces and designers more specific and encompassing of that style instead of general suggestions! :) HTH!

The most important thing is to buy what you love, regardless of price point. Every person can give you an opinion about what they think is classic but it all depends on your individual taste and style. There's no point, for example, in buying something like diamond earrings if you'll never wear them. Most people would consider that a classic piece of jewelry but it really depends on what you as an individual like and what you as an individual will wear.
If you like Tiffany & Co., then you really can't go wrong with any of their jewelry in my opinion.

I agree that it is important to pick out the jewelry that most reflects your taste. I have a fairly large collection of fine jewelry, and my top three most worn items (in addition to my engagement ring and wedding band) are diamond in and out hoop earrings, a diamond Beverley K woven band that I wear on my right hand, and my Cartier Tank watch. Personally I do not buy jewelry at Tiffany because the markup for their brand isn't worth it to me, especially for something like diamond studs. You can get as good or better quality at other retailers for a much better price.

I think diamond studs are not always worth it as a "first" investment piece for nice jewelry (just because they are very expensive to get a really top of the line / size ones and non-interesting relative to other things you could get), but I'd definitely consider some pearl studs. If you get dressed up for work, also a pearl necklace (I consider my pearl necklace like my girl version of a "tie" when I wear a suit. I got a really nice freshwater set from PearlParadise - beautiful and not so expensive. I believe you should buy them as a set because then they match the colors up; otherwise it is hard to find the same color later on. In my opinion, not worth it to get a branded pearl set.

I would explore what rings/necklaces you love and invest in one that you plan to wear as your everyday necklace, which also speaks to you and can be your signature piece. I think that is a better strategy than getting something that you'll only wear for "special occasions" . I wear a silver Tiffany heart necklace as my daily necklace, and recently got a large Cartier trinity ring (waaaay expensive for me!!!) as my right hand ring. Spend your time picking this item out since it is a big purchase!

I really like Tiffany, especially the elsa peretti line. I wear my heart almost daily for the last 3 years and it is as good as new. The heart is a little trendy but I do not mind as I got it from DH for our wedding :) and I like hearts. I think Tiffany silver is definitely worth the price, because it is well made. In my opinion, very worth it to buy Tiffany for silver over non-brand because you know the quality will be excellent.

Just my thoughts! Have fun :) It is easy to spend too much if you visit this forum, haaha. :graucho:

It seems like you're just looking for items that other people found to be basics in order to get ideas for your own wishlist? With the caveat that I worked in banks and other conservative jobs for years so my basics are dull here are the items that have given me a lot of wear:

good quality gold and silver chains in several lengths as I change pendants around a lot to match different necklines. I favor wheat chains as I've had toddlers hang off them without snapping. :p
gemstone stud earrings (diamond, ruby, sapphire, tourmaline, white pearl, grey pearl)
hoop earrings and plain ball earrings in a variety of sizes and in both gold and silver
pearl necklaces in different lengths and colors
gemstone drop pendants (see stud earrings)
a couple moderate quality watches

Once I got all these covered I got a little wilder in my choices.

I went with Tiffany's for my staple pieces. Silver hoop earrings, silver everyday necklace and a few charms I can switch it up with. If I'm spending a lot of money on a designer piece, it's gotta be something I can and WILL wear everyday with anything.

Have fun! :)

I would say a pair of high quality pearl studs for sure to start out with, then later, a pair of nice diamond studs (which you can take your time to save for!)

After that?

A nice basic pendant that reflects you :) Diamond solitaire, pearl, gemstone... whatever! I'm still working on this one. My current which will be upgraded at some point is the tiffany & co mini bow in sterling silver... but really moving away from silver here. In the long run, I wouldn't be aiming to have silver in my 'grown up' collection as much- mainly because it tarnishes and requires constant care on that front... and it doesn't look as nice as white gold/platinum! It's a good inbetween though. I just wouldn't invest money on loads of silver pieces now! Having said that, I do love and still wear my mini bow daily!

Diamond eternity ring
Diamond tennis bracelet
Pearl pendant/necklace/bracelet/tin cup

I would go for gold, white gold, platinum, diamonds, pearls etc as these are classics & in good quality that will not tarnish!

What I love:
Diamond studs
Diamond necklace
Tennis bracelet
A good watch

I think choices would depend on your age.
Since you are interested in starting a fine jewelry collection...pick something classic but fun!
A small pair of good quality diamond studs or diamond huggies would be a good start.
You mentioned Tiffany...I like the bead collection in sterling silver. Classic to Tiffany and can be dressed up or down. Tiffany sells the earrings, necklace and bracelet combos...plus affordable!
Have fun!!!

It will be nice to have a pair of earrings, a necklace/pendant, watch and a bracelet. I don't really like rings so apart from my wedding set, rings are not must haves for me.

Design wise, depends on what ur taste Is like. Are u more conservative, adventurous, quirky, etc? It doesn't matter what others feel are staples. What matters is what U are comfortable with. For e.g. don't buy studs if u don't like them.

U said u like tiffany. Well, tiffany have lots of designs to choose from. If u are looking for something to wear long term, however, I'd recommend gold/platinum over silver though. Have fun shopping!

I'm a staple everyday Tiffany silver girl - I love the clean, classic lines of many of their pieces (especially Elsa Peretti), and it's great to have the 1837 and RTT collections to inject some youth and fun into what I'm wearing.

There's just a thrill I get when I'm wearing Tiffany that I can't get from high street jewellery, even if they're of better materials.

Saying all of this, you may want to consider why you wish to upgrade your collection and let that guide your personal choice.
