Bags from companies, that don't use fur.

I'm really inspired by this post - I'm a vegetarian but have always been very conflicted about my love of material goods (very much including leather). I wish more companies would follow Stella McCartney's lead... I try to focus my luxury goods addiction on her label but admittedly it is a slow transition. I've noticed in the last few years a lot of retailers - luxury and otherwise - are featuring more fur products too. The recent trendiness of rabbit fur clothing is particularly horrifying IMO as it can retail at very low prices and most rabbit fur is produced in China, where regulations are notoriously lax and animals are treated horribly. I've also read articles saying that real fur is often wrongly labelled as faux fur because it is DOG OR CAT fur and companies do not want to discourage western buyers. It makes me feel so sick.

Yes, it would be great if Stella McCartney could inspire more designers to go in her direction!
And yeah, it's really terrible how animal welfare in China is almost non-existing :(. The way they get the hair of the rabbits to make angora sweaters is also horrifying!
I've also heard of the dog/cat fur being mislabeled as faux fur. So sad.
Also Marc Jacobs had labeled some fur as faux when it actually contained raccoon dog fur. Raccoon dogs are often skinned alive, it's an abomination. I almost threw up when I read it and had a small anxiety attack. :(

I am wanting to find companies that use alternative materials as well. There are many youtube vids of reveals of beautiful vegan handbags. Moving forward.

Thank you all for posting all of this. The idea of any living being experiencing the unimaginable suffering of being skinned alive so we can have “pretty” things is nauseating. I stopped buying fur and exotics years ago, but I want to do better. Just as health and labor practices and architectural standards change the more we know, I predict that as we humans move forward and continue to develop high tech fabrics and materials, wearing anything made of someone’s skin will begin to seem antiquated and barbaric.

I am very interested in the new high-tech fabrics and materials that are both strong and lightweight. I love the idea of meta-materials (can you imagine having an "invisible" purse?), electronic textiles and nano technology. Scientists are developing "designer atoms" that can be assembled into an almost limitless array of materials and coatings. It's pretty cool. I foresee that companies that can integrate these new technologies creatively into fashion, will be the new leaders, and companies stuck in old-fashioned ways will get left behind.
