Bag vs Bag, What Brand is Better than Who?!?!

Thanks for the thread red30. I must admit it really got me thinking. Here in Montana the highest end bags you can buy in a store are Coach and Dooney and that is at Dillards and T.J. Maxx. When I lived in Chicago it was a different story all together .The Chanel's and Herme's and L.V.s. would greet you on just about every corner of Michigan ave. I feel that a bag is a reflection of the person carrying it. We have all seen cases where the bag does not fit the owner and what a sad coment that is . There is really no Best brand and I know for myself that I can be in a L.V. mono mood one day and a Coach carryall the next . That being said I also agree that the lower end bashing does get to be a little much. Class does not depend on how much or little money is in your wallet and putting down other people's bag choices does not raise you on the class scale either. Let's be honest unless you are one of the twelve that have an L.V. tribute bag or a $65K Croc Birken with diamonds who have earned the right to truly look down on the 99% of the population that doesn't. you really should not be saying anything about if someone likes a 14.99 target totebag instead of a 2k+ Bottega Veneta satchel .

Like others have said, no amount of money can purchase class. There will always be people who feel the need to put others and their choices down in order to make themselves feel superior. Sad but true.

In the grand scheme of things, we have to realize that about 90% of the population doesn't give a flying fig about what bag anyone carries. We tend to think everyone is looking at us when other people are just worried about themselves. So if a person carries a bag for any other reason than it is what they truly love, then it is pointless. A bag cannot give a person class, status, or admiration, except perhaps in the eyes of a stranger. And anyone who buys something to impress a stranger is a fool.

Honestly, I buy what appeals to me. I have high and low end bags. I'm not loyal to any one brand-except maybe Marc Jacobs. I like Coach but only the all leather ones. I'm not a fan of Dooney because none of the styles appeal to me. And, although my most expensive bag is $1600, one of my favorites is my $129 Abro that I got at TJ's! I think I remember a thread not too long ago that asked if anyone would rather have 3 less expensive bags or 1 high end bag and I answered 'high end', because to me the less bags I have, the better. I don't want 20 bags in my closet, I'd have too much of a hard time deciding which one to use. Anyway, I hope this thread doesn't get out of hand, I know sometimes these can get a little heated.

I don't think I understand. So it's okay for the people with the croc birkins to look down on the unwashed masses?

i personally feel that maybe you people are spending to much time thinking about others opinions of you. everyone has their own sense of style and certain brands appeal to certain people. thats what makes diversifies the world. if everyone dressed alike, wore the same clothes and spoke the same language the world wouldn't be as diverse.

i believe that its unfair for people to pass judgement on another person period. it has nothing to do with "class" low, middle or upper, people simply like what they like. who are we to look down on some because they don't have what you have. and it may not necessarily be because they can't afford it, may its because its not their "style"

people allow society to set standards and dictate what are "status" symbols. are you better than me because you live in Miami and I live in Boise? am i better than you because I drive a Phantom and you take public transportation? NO.

its simply the choices that me make. when we die we can't take LV, Balenciaga, Chanel, Hermes, Gucci or any other brand with us, they amount of money in your bank account or the lack there of cant be used as leverage. because in the end we will all be judged by the same "standards"
people should never allow material or superficial things to be the thing in life that bring them joy.

no matter what you have, there's always going to be someone, somewhere that has more or less than you. but as long as your comfortable with yourself and know who you are, you can walk the world unbothered.

...I feel that a bag is a reflection of the person carrying it...
Wow! :confused1: I came home one night and my entire building was burned to the ground. All I had was the clothes on my back. I lost everything. At the time I was new in my career. I had 1 LV, a Coach bag, and 1 Dooney and I didn't even think twice about them. I was just glad that DH and I weren't at home when it happened and all of my neighbors made it out alive. That night, DH and I went to a 24hr Kmart because that was the only thing open. I bought a purse because I had only taken my laptop case to work that day. I will wear my Kmart bag until it falls apart. I have come a long way since that night, both spiritually and financially and I am thankful for every purse and article I have in my closets. I have a lot of "stuff" but my "stuff" doesn't define me. My heart of gratitude prohibits me from looking down on others and it keeps me humble. But if your statement is true, then I am merely a blue light special!

Nooch, my point is that there will always be those who have croc Birkins and those who don't .
PsychoBagLady, i am so sorry to hear about the fire and am very happy no one was hurt or killed I hope you wear your k-mart bag as a badge of honor. You are wearing a bag that encompasses you. So many times we have seen where the bag is the focal point of a person instead of the other way around. I will be fighting you over that Jaquelyn smith bag in the future then we can both be blue light specials.

Excellent points to remind us all that bags are only bags and nothing more. And I'm so glad you rose above your difficulties, PsychoBagLady.

LV papillion versus D&B barrel bag .

LV pappillion is made out of canvas ( bedford style is patent leather with vachette trim) and has vachette trim and has one inside pocket
range from $675- $1350 ( although i remember when the prices were a tad Lower they keep raising prices)

D&B is a mixture of coated canvas and fabric canvas but comes with two inside zip pockets /built in key chain / an open pocket for 30 or 80gb ipod that can also hold a pack of cigs in the same slot and another pocket to that can hold a tin of mints or some lip gloss & mascar.
range from $155- 185 . I would assume that more workmanship would have to go into making all those inside features of the bag ; but then again the LV cost more ( why they are both canvas?) i know leather comes in different grades but does canvas? I will say that the D&B canvas has a mat like finish while LV canvas has the grain bumps.

I luved the LV bedford but felt it lacked some how ( like why no pocket for ipod, i mean they are a luxury label and an ipod is a luxury product. I liken it to BENZ with no GPS ). Then i came across D&B and luved the function aspect. Their are just so many bag style shapes one can make. It is how they are crafted which sets each label apart.

Style and function are key to me ; but i will say that to some a higher price tag brings in this feeling of "i have arrived status". I have had many people say you buy coach b/c you can't afford Gucci or D&B is just a fake LV . I use to be offended by such comments but now I am not. I buy what fits my personality and my needs. I love D&B b/c i can have a bag with hand prints/ scribble writing when i a feeling punk rock. A nice soft leather hobo for those relaxed days or an embossed croc leather design in Honey for that stand out office piece. We can spend all the money in the world on the most $$$ items ; but our speech / actions will show what type of class we have ( hence MY Fair lady anyone).

its very simple for me, i just buy what i love...i have lv, balenciaga, coach, dooney, b.markowsky, etc...i dont love all styles of any brand. if i had unlimited funds, i wouldnt go out and just buy high end bags, i would still buy what attracts me.
