So what about the rings from Jewelers like Kay's, Day's or Jared's etc. They have 1 ct + for less than $3,000. Is the other high prices due to the brand (tiffany etc)? Or is it solitare vs. a 3 stone ring?

Branding plays a part but a larger factor is the diamond. Most diamonds on the websites for those stores are lower color, cut, and almost always significantly lower clarity (in the I1-I3 range). This will make a huge difference in pricing regardless of vendor.

I was in Kay one day getting a ring inspected and I saw a 1 ct. diamond solitaire that they were selling in the $3000 range and there were black carbon spots all over it, it looked awful! They just advertise those prices to get people in there.

I don't blame the banks for people spending beyond their means. People need some common sense and must take accountability for their own actions

I'm not holding people unaccountable for their own actions. I agree that people need to have responsibility for what they do, but I also don't think that these banks should keep offerring more credit and more credit to people who obviously can't afford it. The government makes it so easy for people who get themselves in financial trouble to just claim bankruptcy and poof the debt is gone. If the banks didn't loan them so much to begin with then they wouldn't be able to get themselves in so much debt and ultimately make interest rates and fees higher for all of us that do pay our bills and try to live within our means. :smile1:

I don't think we are to judge whether or not a young couple should spend x amount of money on a nice ring... I also believe in the 3 month rule and that is is the man's choice to spend more if he so chooses. I don't think that just because a couple is young that they can't afford a good ring, careful budgeting always makes wonders happen.. I know thats how I'm able to afford my little "presents" to myself. I would certainly hope no man is overextending himself to make his woman happy but we all know that happens sometimes.

Well my dh and I are both attorneys honestly I can't remember how much it was but my ring was less than 10k for sure. I'm probably way more financially conservative than others on tpf though. I don't get why you'd want jewelry over the security and freedom of cash in the bank. Then again lately I've been in looking for a splurge mode!

Where i live in Europe it's 1000 dollars or even less. Even older people don't wear large diamonds. It's realy a cultutal thing. Strangely i don't like anything big. I hope my boyfriend wont go over 50 point in size and i have big hands!

When all was said and done with my engagement ring, it cost my DH around $19,000. I picked out my center diamond and my side stones and they originally were in a plain white gold 3 stone setting with no side stones (similar to the Tiffany Lucida setting) and then I got them reset before our wedding and that setting alone was around $2700 if memory serves me. Obviously, most of what he spent was on the diamonds and my new setting came with the wedding bands so he somewhat saved there. We also didn't go to Tiffany's or Cartier or any luxury brand. We got my diamonds from Leo Ingwer, which suited me just fine.

I won't be upgrading anytime soon (DH says maybe when get to our 50th anniversary :p ) and he didn't go into debt over it, but it obviously wasn't pocket change. He had the money in savings, he's so much better at saving money than I am!

One of my friends has a Scott Kay white gold halo setting from Jared's and her husband got her diamond there too and it's awful. I think he spent around $6000 total and the setting itself was $2300, so the diamond (it's almost a carat) was only $3700. IMO, it's definitely not worth $3700, it has a big carbon spot just off center in the table. I think if you're going to spend $3700, make it a good $3700!

I got married in my 20's and I dont wear a diamone e-ring, we put a dowm payment on a house instead. I see alot of people around wear a live wearing huge eye popping diamonds. It may be just me, but I can not see sending 3 months salary on a ring.
