Should the M be D? i can only imagine the years, decades, time & passion that you have to do this…. much obliged, I’m enjoying all my learning opportunities. the bag didn’t cost much… should i keep it & take out the patch & make a flower pot out of it or send it back?
Not necessarily. There was a 1998 US M plant but the serial number font on your bag isn't correct for that year/plant.

The plant code in this case doesn't matter. the DATE CODE is a full year before the style was even introduced. All the evidence I've found and saved so far indicates that the M plant code for ANY plant was discontinued and the M code retired in early 1998. It was brought back temporarily for a CHINESE plant around 2004-05. As BeenBurned also said, the font isn't correct for the M plant either.

Then there's the problem with the strap grommets. Silver?

How long ago did you buy it?

yesterday- it’s in the mail. I can return it- I’ve been in contact with the seller. She’s very nice & happy if i send it back. She’s been burned on a fake bag once & understands.

There should have been only 4 holes in the strap if it was an authentic bag, right?

That's another problem, but straps can be replaced so we never use discrepancies in replaceable parts like straps or hangtags as primary proof of authenticity, or lack of it.
The strap (whether replaced or not) on the fake also had silver grommets although the hardware on the bag was gold. If it were genuine Coach with the original strap, it wouldn't have mismatched hardware.

Yep, that's what I was referring to in my earlier post here:

Almost without exception, straps that have silver-ish or silver-color grommets on "Coaches" with brass buckles have, at least 98 percent of the time in my very rough estimation, been found on fakes. I can remember seeing at the most, maybe two or three genuine Coaches with mismatched-hardware straps that had probably been replaced by a previous owner. All the rest have been counterfeit. Fortunately for us, when counterfeiters are too lazy, too clueless or too cheap to match up all the hardware, they've made other proveable mistakes in those fakes too.
