I will defer to the experienced rehabbers regarding value of a dyed or painted bag. (I don't rehab and have seen some "polished" bags that I wouldn't take if they were given away for free!)

You may want to get advice here:
Coach Rehab and Rescue Club

But since you're asking about a specific listing and before accepting (or even considering) the seller's offer, you should verify authenticity on this thread. And you are ABSOLUTELY correct that a dye job should have been disclosed. (I have a secret guess as to the seller! And if I'm right, I avoid at all costs. JMHO.)

Thanks. I lurk on the rehab and rescue thread, and have read that some collectors dye or paint their bags. I don't judge that, but if you're going to sell me one that's been rehabbed in that manner, please tell me first!!

I didn't feel comfortable with that bag from the get-go....just looked TOO good/perfect....which is why I didn't bid and didn't ask for an authentication. So when the less than half-off BIN offer came, I started asking questions.

I'd love to know who you think the seller is!! Can we private message on this site??

So how does it "typically" (is there such a thing?) affect value??

Had an ebay experience earlier this morning.....a vintage leather bag was just stunningly gorgeous!! I'd been watching it for a few days. Seller made a BIN offer for less than half the listing price. I messaged to ask about condition, overall color consistency, fading, etc., because I'd had a prior issue with this seller (which was resolved with great customer service on their part). I then was told this bag had been re-dyed, but this information wasn't listed anywhere in the auction description. I believe that should be disclosed to potential buyers. I chose not to buy it, but someone else did.

I admire and appreciate like new vintage bags but I prefer the "au naturel" ones, even if I have to work hard at rehabbing them.
To me, it really depends on what they used and how good of a job they did. If the inside is a different color than the outside, I stay away. It is almost impossible to tell from a photo how you will like it in real life. My biggest concern is how it changes the suppleness and sheen of the leather. Most dyes are too shiny, and many make the leather stiffer. Some people say it has been dyed when they really mean they used shoe polish, which is horrible. I try to avoid recoloring a bag because it is really difficult to get the results I want with the products that are available. I have no problem with using a tiny amount of paint or dye to touch up the edges, but an overall paint job is something I try to stay away from. I have dyed and sold a couple bags, with full disclosure, and the buyers were happy.

Yes, I am the only bidder. Lots of watchers, guess the strap leather rip didn't appeal to them much. Thanks again, glad to get it at a fair decent price, but shipping and import add up close to the same as bidding price. Sigh...
Cant wait to see it when you get to do a rehab.
I put an offer in for a Taft...man I have to stop buying.

Hello, could someone look at this purse. It is 9" x 11". It has an interesting drawstring section underneath the flap. It is missing the hangtag. I bought it online but now I don't remember which platform I bought it on. Here are photos.

It's authentic. It's a Lightweights Shoulder Bag #4050. It's very unusual to see one that hasn't faded. This one looks to be in excellent condition. Was it dyed?

Item: Coach Poppy leather hobo bag ($45)
Seller and site where listed: tripbilly, Poshmark

Comments: This bag was listed as a Poppy Hobo but I believe that it is an XL Ergo Tote 10744 made in 2006, correct? I know that the older, vintage, Ergo bags were often faked but I don't know about these later Legacy Striped Ergo bags.

The lining is disgustingly filthy but I hope that I can rehab it. Please give an opinion about authenticity and identity, thanks in advance!
It looks fine.

You probably saw it at rehab& rescue that I painted 2 navy bags recently. Wish I didn't buy them. The navy Court from Etsy's, if it was from eBay, with those undisclosed hardware damage and misleading description of bag, I would have no problem to return it. ( I will never shop at Etsy again, they don't do much to ensure seller to list an item honestly). The Devon was from thrift shop years ago when I knew nothing.
Anyway I definitely will avoid purchase anything that may require overall painting, like Whateve said, a little bit corner or piping color touch up is no big deal to me too, as long as I knew ahead what I am getting into.
Now if a bag looks like being rehabed, I will avoid buying it. Just in case.. This is the kind of condition I prefer to purchase for a vintage bag, nobody touched it yet, and will rehab well with just washing and conditioning.
