I think dressing well is important because 'looking the part' is often key to success in the professional world - for me being in the finance industry, things are very much about how people perceive you - whether they feel they can trust you and that you look like someone who knows what they're talking about.

I dress in a feminine manner but I don't actively seek attention. The rules for me - I don't wear high heels above 5cm (that includes CL's!!), I don't wear tops that reveal cleavage, I don't wear skirts that go above the knee. I wear fairly fitted clothing because I know I have a good figure but I don't see anything wrong with that - I'm fairly flat all over so I don't think it's particularly attention grabbing! I try to keep makeup simple.

I think women who push the boundary too far - and I've seen a lot of them around - are only doing themselves a disservice because they're presenting an image that is telling people to judge them completely on the way they dress - not on their work.

i don't get the essence of this idea.

isn't dressing in a more skimpy/revealing fashion only going to result in a loss of respect from your bosses and co-workers, rather than a promotion? any professional who has his/her mind in the right place (aka THE JOB) will think like this.

that's what i've always thought and i've always kept it conservative.

:shrugs:

I have had male bosses encourage me to dress less conservative. I'm in sales so...

I think there is a fine line one can walk to dress in such a way that it attracts the attention of men and the admiration of women. But I stress the is a very very fine line. I personally won't have anything to do with it. I have always been the most successful on various sales team, even when I was heavier and I'm still no skinny Minnie. My clients liked my personality and intellect not my clothes

As someone who works in the fashion industry, I don't necessarily think dressing well gets you ahead, but I think it helps you get attention (either positive or negative). I mean let's face it, not all people care about what they put on their bodies and it doesn't make them less intelligent. Some of the things people wear to my office are not the most attractive or put together, but they hold the jobs they do because they can do the work. There are a handful of people who dress fashionably and well. I think it may have helped us get where we are faster, but we can also do the job we were hired to do as well.

Dressing at work....and 2 different subjects : dressing skimpy to get ahead, and fashion rivalty at work.
I think a woman can be sexy and classy (sophie´s example of the Louboutin and fitted skirts), then comes the attitude and what´s bugs me the most with women who are overly flirty.
I would also think a inappropriate cleavage will lose her the respect of managers, rather than get a promotion.
I understand dressing nicely is VERY important when getting a job or even promotion. Can´t deny it, image .... when meeting people at work I can´t help it but be more intimidated when the person is nicely dressed (that means trendy or classic stylish to me).

In the creative field, I don´t judge, I "feel" the level of talent of the person according to his/her personal style. Whatever the style is....I am speaking of Creative field only.

Actually don´t you find it interesting how CLEAR the dressing codes are according to your job ???......go in the cafeteria of a big corporation and identify who´s marketing, who´s engineer, who´s designer, who´s secretary, etc.....easy, right ?!

^agree with mellecyn, I would gladly dress sexy if that's a part of fashion rivalry (as opposed to dressing skimpy for a male boss .. yuck). I can't think of a better situation than going to work with other pretty women who love fashion because I love to dress up everyday!

I want to go into Ibanking or corporate law--so absolutely not.

In IBD, if I even looked a bit skimpy I'd be thrown out on my ass. Rightfully so.

In those corporate circumstances, women who use looks to advance should be immediately fired. I'm not ugly, so I'm not bitter or anything. I just think the professional world should be about brains and ambition and skill.

And clearly, women who don't know that are too dumb to go anywhere in life.
