Are we being unfair to Chanel re prices?

I occasionally get quotes for a NWT classic flap I’ve owned since 2009ish. I could get back what I paid then, but I wouldn’t make a profit. If you use a third party, you’re typically not making money on flipping bags. That’s why all the investment talk irks me so badly.
My pet peeve. Seems to be a high % of questions asked on the forum, people thinking they can resell back for the same amount they spent. I yell at the screen %$#@!!!!

I have been thinking about adding a medium classic flap to my collection for the longest time but every time i looked at the $8800 price I was like hmmm … now I regret not buying one at that price because as of yesterday the medium classic flap is now $10200 USD … at what point do you draw a line for how much you spent on a bag ? Lets say you had unlimited funds

If you are not happy with:

1. The Chanel price increase
2. The “declining quality” of Chanel bags
3. The “resale” value of Chanel
4. The customer service for Chanel boutiques

Then

1. Go to Hermes so that Chanel addicts can once again walk in to a boutique a purchase whatever they would like then and there.

2. I haven’t had any issues on any of my bags because before I buy them, I inspect the item before they wrap it up. ALWAYS INSPECT YOUR PURCHASES.

3. The resale value of Hermes bags and what you see on Sothebys / Fashionphile /REBAG? That is not what you're going to get for your Kelly or Birkin. The most you will get is MSRP unless you're selling a VERY rare bag like a picnic, a mini Birkin or a faubourg bag. To get the best resale value for a Kelly or Birkin, you’re gonna have to sell it yourself on eBay or maybe a friend and that will be hard to do.

P.S. good luck playing games with Hermes and take care of your self esteem.

4. You are the customer; do not let a SA make you feel less and don’t expect validation from a SA. You are there to purchase their merch and they are there to sell; when you do receive bad service, politely ask for the manager. Nothing will hurt more than asking for the manager when you get bad service (like a SA blatantly being rude to you) at a boutique.

I am not very in tune with everything happening at Chanel but did hear noise about the most recent price increase. It proves that they are running a business like a business, maximizing profits for shareholders. Is it unfair? Not exactly because they answer to shareholders.

For the ones saying the prices right now take it away from being an "investment", IMHO, I dont think we can consider luxury bags as investments. There are actual investment vehicles that do this (stocks, t-bills, bonds, etc.). It just happened that Chanel bags more or less retain their value. Do you think about reselling your car when you purchase it? What about your primary residence, do you think about selling it before you even buy it? I think treating luxury bags as an investment is a marketing scheme from resale market that encourages us to buy more...

Chanel doesnt have shareholders. It's privately owned by the Wertheimer family and they own 100% of the business. But I do agree with you that they're running a business and trying to maximize profits (for themselves)

I think Chanel has already tried to limit the availability of Classic flaps. I know there is usually a limit on how many an account can buy per month. And I know they don't always have them on display (you have to ask to be shown one). They usually won't ship Classic flaps either. I've also read that some believe you have to form a relationship with a SA to buy one (though I have not experienced this). It'll be interesting to see what else Chanel comes up with, because I do think they will try to make them more scarce!
I agree with this and have certainly noticed an increasing trend towards this over the past 1-2 years. Certainly where I shop classic flaps are not on display and ordered in each colour in limited quantities. Those bags that are ordered are allocated to long term client prior to launch. If I am unsure I have been openly told to take as much time as I want as the bag will never be displayed. The only time I have seen them displayed in the past few years is when the colour is less popular for whatever reason or certain flaps like tweeds or some lambskin bags. There are also buying limits of one every 60 days but this does not apply to long term clients.

Having said that I do think classics especially in seasonal colours (except black or beige Clair and the ever popular light pink colours) are a relatively niche item - the people I tend to see buying them and preordering them are people who have many in different colours and enjoy collecting them. For the price point you can get at least a couple of seasonal bags/SLGs

I have purchased Chanel bags for at least two decades at this point. I think my biggest quality issue now is hardware (older hardware, especially gold I just feel was better) and some minor sloppiness that I have also seen in older pieces however I think it's more frequent now. I finally found a new WOC that I was quite impressed with and purchased, I was also impressed with the experience overall with and the chip and registration etc.... where as maybe 18 years ago I'd buy 2-3 bags and a few accessories in a year, now I buy A WOC in a year and I'm fine with that. I love to use the pieces I have taken care of for years and enjoy very much. So I agree, buy less and choose more carefully, although I feel it's easier for those of us to say who have already had the opportunity to buy more in the past.
So true. The older bags used to have 24K gold plate, I have a 30+ year old bag, and the gold looks so much shinier & prettier than any of my current classic/boy bags.

In light of the recent price increase I wanted to revive this discussion.

I believe Chanel is taking a risky approach, and their brand image may be overvalued. In fact, I would argue that purchasing a new boutique Chanel bag is comparable to buying a brand-new car.
As the popular saying goes, the moment you drive a new car off the lot, its value depreciates significantly. Similarly, if you were to buy a new boutique Chanel medium flap bag at full price and later attempt to sell it, you would not be able to recoup the same amount you paid initially (unless it happens to be one of the elusive “IT bags”).
In other words, while Chanel bags may be highly sought-after and luxurious, they are not necessarily a wise investment in terms of long-term value retention.

Well, then just wait a few years and you will be able to sell your bag for what you paid for it. (Try that with your used car!)

Couldn’t have said it any better. If you’re not happy with Chanel and the prices or whatever it may be, then go somewhere else so loyal customers can start getting whatever we want again. I said what I said.
Except at a crazy premium now and I was able to easily get what I wanted back in 2004-(when I decided the pricing on purses was out of my desired range to pay) without having to pay the price I paid for a 3 year old certified pre owned mini cooper a few years ago, lol!

There’s a lot of discussion about how ridiculous Chanel’s prices are these days, but are they really?

Hear me out.

A medium Lady Dior is $6100 USD.
A medium Fendi Peekaboo is $5600.
A YSL Icare tote is $4900.
Bottega Veneta Jodie is $4100 and the medium Cabat is $9100.
Even Gucci is up there these days with the Blondie at $3600.
And we all know about Hermes pricing.

So again, I ask, are we being unfair by being so hard on Chanel? Yes, ALL high-end bags are crazy-expensive, and Chanel is top tier, so I guess what I’m saying is that it makes some sort of sense when you compare their prices to other luxury bag prices.

Am I wrong? What do you think?
(p.s. I’m by no means saying that I’m happy about any of it!!)

Med Blondie is $3980 (so basically $4K) and mine was higher
