I think a flat cardholder is useful as an extra thing in your wallet. I use mine for lunch runs and sometimes if I carry a very large wallet I put the card holder in the wallet so I can store my credit and debit cards, ID and social security card plus a couple of other cards with other vital information. That way I can easily grab my essential cards if I change into a tiny bag or run out for lunch etc.
I don't think I could survive carrying just a flat card holder - I have to have so many cards with me and the amount hasn't really gotten any smaller since having a stroke I have to have my ICE card, medication info and insurance card with me at all times. My minimum amount I would take on a work day would be 9 cards and that amount makes a flat card holder bulge so bad. Also you have to be SO careful on where you place the card holder in your bag so you don't have to panic every time when you don't find it.
My favorite card holders these days are LV Empreinte Clés and Furla Babylon card holder which both can carry all of my cards and cash. They are also a bit bigger so they don't completely vanish into my bag.
