This year has been pretty good for my wallet - the fashions are not for me!

It seems like every brand, every bag, at every price has gone all in for embellishment.

Even brands that were generally pretty plain have added puffs, fur, studs, rivets, embroidery, tweed, glitter and all sorts of other busy details.

What’s the deal? What happened to the plainer items?

LOL! I feel your pain. I don't like a lot of doo dads on my bags either. I think heavily embellished bags can look dated very quickly and far too easily fall into tacky ville. :whut: But, I think this current trend is a reaction against the previous several years of more restrained design. Kind of like how mini bags followed the huge bag trend of a decade ago.

But, simple bags are still out there. We just have to hunt. This year I bought a Fendi By The Way (no studs, no tail) and a Max Mara Whitney tote. But purchases were the result of loooong, frustrating searches for bags with limited or no branding and classic styling.

And I think we have another few seasons of tricky shopping. The 90s logo trend has evolved and visible logos and monogram designs are back too!

Yea, I know. I was kind horrified to see them back at Dior.

Why is it so hard for brands to design with discreet or deleted logos??? I don't want or need everyone to know the brand of bag I carry.

I think the minimalist trend from around 2008 is starting to fade and now we're going back to the maximalist stuff like studs and logos and prints etc. things come and go I guess.

If you're still looking for gorgeous simple bags then some brands you can look into are

Hermes
Bottega Veneta
Celine (not the luggage but they have other nice simple designs)
Mansur Gavriel
Coach (some of their designs are super simple and I love them)
Senreve
The Row

I am not a fan of the embellishment but I think some pieces that surely are pieces of art. I have heard that for some high-end fashion houses, they might prefer the maximalist styles rather than the minimalist styles because the latter is a lot easier for high street/contemporary/indie brands to replicate. For younger generation who cares more about design rather than craftsmanship/material, it is hard to justify a $3000 Celine over a $30 Zara when they actually look similar. This might be the reasoning under those big logo bags as well, since I don't see Zara putting big logos on their bags any time soon. But still, I don't enjoy having other people's name or initials on my bag even he/she is a famous designer :oh:

I like a good over-the-top bag. However, there’s a limit because it can easily be too much. I don’t mind embellishment on a plain leather bag. I do not like them on an overly designed bag if that makes sense. For example, studs on a Céline Box bag would be my cup of tea. Put those same studs on a Chanel quilted Flap wouldn’t appeal to me. The quilting would be enough.

I am okay with some embellishments but if it starts to look cheap and tacky then I do not like it. A few flowers or butterflies or something I like anyway, which personalizes the bag and adds to its design will not bother me. Many people add charms and keychains and scarves to handbags to personalize them, and I see those as embellishments as well, except they can be detached. It is a trend that will go away and be replaced with something else.

I don’t mind a little bit. But it is like we have snake with tweed, studs and color blocking. We went from Coco Chanel’s take one thing off to add on 2 more things.

I don't mind embellishments if they are well attached and edgy with a sense of quality, but I was shocked to see the embellishments that are cheap craft shop studs and 2-cent plastic jewels on bags costing $300-3000?! I think the plastic googly eyes on Gucci bags and the Claire's-like bejeweled bags from Henri Bendel made me cool off the trend now.

Ehhh, maybe it's all subconscious and the embroidered patches mentally bring me back to high school in the 90's when I slapped patches on everything I owned

I do like painting on bags though!

The list provided by Yoshi1296 is good.
I've never owned nor handled one, so I don't know about the quality, but Valextra has attractive yet minimalist bags to me.

Personally, I don't like overly embellished and overly designed bags.
