I've never seen anyone make big cash payments in-store in the U.S. boutiques, at least in my experience but I've seen it often in Europe, big cash payments mostly by Russian, Arab or Asian tourists.

The biggest factor being credit cards - Americans want to accrue reward points with their CC's and most US credit cards have no foreign transaction fees. And Americans also don't typically carry that much cash with them on the daily or while traveling, for safety reasons. In other countries, most of their Credit cards either charge foreign transaction fees or don't have high spending limits on their CC's.

I’ve seen it a few times, twice at a stand alone and once at Neiman Marcus.
At the stand alone boutique, they had a counter, like the ones in a bank and ran the stack of cash through the counter. At Neiman Marcus the SA counted by hand. The cash purchase I saw at the stand alone, two girls purchased the XXL bag and at Neiman Marcus a m/l classic flap was purchased. I was in shock that in all the situations they carried that much cash with them.

I’m in the UK, and see people pay cash very often at the Manchester bounique. Usually tourists but the SAs have to do a double count/check as it’s obviously always a lot of cash. I see it often but it amazes me every time.
