Another TPFer PBC posted an AMAZING Tanzanite Ring in the "Show Me Your Right Hand Please" thread. Perhaps you'd like to take a look?

It totally 'enabled' me to look out of something of my own.....!

I have a very pale, cheap Tanzanite which I wear in place of my engagement ring when it goes to be cleaned/resized/etc. Because it was so cheap, I don't feel bad about abusing it somewhat! (I also happened to get it on a cruise ship with my 40% crew discount, or I probably wouldn't have ever bought it.)

I have a very pale tanzanite bead necklace...it has a very pretty color hue...and the more darker ones are just sooo pretty....but diamonds are alot better imo.

Tanzanite used to cost very little, then with marketing and big companies buying it up by the truck loads, it has gone up. I believe that the cost of tanzanites will continue to rise with demand but not like a diamond. Tanzanite is very soft and there are sapphires and other competing colors out there, but diamonds are in a class of its own so the two are very different.

I wouldn't call it a scam. They do push the tanzanite like crazy on cruise ships, but the price is rising each year, particularly for the better quality stones. As far as rarity goes, Alexandrite is the rarest stone, and very expensive. However, I doubt anything will truly rival the popularity of the diamond, even though they really aren't rare, and their distribution is carefully controlled.

We went on a cruise with some friends several years ago, and they decided to buy some tanzanite as an investment. Problem was, they bought jewelry. The price may go up a bit, but used jewelry is much harder to sell than loose stones. They sure are pretty though!

Then you know how they were touting it as the next best investment aboard the cruise ship. I just feel so sorry about the elderly falling for it hook line and sinker. There was a elderly couple that that bought 2 stones for there grandchildren for e-rings. I am thinking better off just leaving them the money and let them pick out what they want. Tanzanite while pretty will never ever come close to a diamond. Thats why a Diamond is a girl's best friend.

I own a tanzanite ring which I bought in Cape Town from a small jeweller at the V&A waterfront. It wasn't cheap but is a dark blue/purple tension set in white gold. It's completely different to the stuff the sell on the TV [Gems TV etc] which tend to be quite pale. I think it's a case of "you gets what you pay for".

Yes you can pick up a cheap diamond ring but it'll have inclusions etc. With Tanzanite, you look for depth of colour.

Tanzanite is the biggest scam there is. It is being sold on many cruise ships to the elderly people as a investment for the future. It is not going to replace diamonds ever! I repeat EVER! Whenever you see a tazanite just walk away. Unless it was such a good deal and that you like really like it to wear it and not as a investment.

funny, i guess everything depends on one's perspective - i'm a colored gemstone fancier and would have said the biggest scam is the way the debeers cartel controls worldwide production and distribution of diamonds to keep the prices artificially inflated.

a fine white diamond is much less rare than, say a fine kashmir sapphire or mogok ruby. which isn't to say that diamonds aren't beautiful, but their value is affected by more than a pure supply and demand economy.

as for tanzanite, some of it is fine and some of it is junk -- like most breeds of stones. fine tanzanite is OK for investment, but unfortunately the popularity of the stone means that the pricing for lower quality has been riding the coat tails of gem quality material.

ETA: investing in gems is a relative term -- for most people a mutual fund makes more sense for pure investment value. and tanzanite is NOT an undervalued stone, so it will be quite some time before the average purchaser can make a profit on it. i've always felt gems are like art - buy what you love for a fair price today and enjoy it on its own merits.

here's my tanzanite and diamond ring DH got for me recently. the tanzanite is 11.50 carats and is a deep blue with flashes of purple. DH did not buy it as an investment piece, but merely just as a piece of fine jewel to add to my collection. i don't ever plan on selling it so i'm going to just enjoy it bc it's BEAUTIFUL and it puts a smile on my face when i wear it.

hubba- hubba, PBC - now THAT is a tanzanite of the old school!

it was initially more popular for its deep velevety blues rather than purple. here's another one that could move into my jewelry box any time

A big tanzanite of premium color is so awesome. PBC, your ring is fierce! I recently saw a beautiful stone down in St. Thomas -- it was gorgeous, it looked like it was full of pink glitter. The only problem? It was $18,000!
