I actually went to the diamond district a couple days ago and felt so dirty. Everyone was trying to get me into their shop and I really was just looking. I wasn't planning on making a purchase that day. I just don't know anyone and feel like I might be taken advantage of.

Sounds like the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Maybe with the downturn in the economy its gotten more competitive to get customers.

We were there once, about a year after 9/11. I wasn't comfortable. Also felt like we were ripe for the picking.

nycdiva, sorry to hear you had a bad experience in the diamond district. I felt really comfortable, but I was with my husband at the time so maybe that made a difference. I also know a fair amount about diamonds so I was not too worried about being taken advantage of. I was also there at least 6 years ago now so it may be a different environment.

onegirlcreative, I will see if I have a pic of my ring that I can post. It is hard to see the detail in the photo, though, because you will not see how ornately carved the band is or that there are little diamonds all throughout the setting. I still love looking at it every day!
