An interesting study on why women buy expensive designer handbags

I buy a branded handbag ONLY and ONLY because I want to! Half of the world doesnt even know about brands so much and not many understand its importance ( they think what a waste spending thousand of dollars on a bag, might as well buy precious stones) and there are soooo many fakies nowadays that people who would wana how off would buy that and only true lovers would buy original!

Silly garbage. Who pays these people for these studies and who cares? Women purchase pricey designer bags because we deserve things that make us feel nice for all the hard work we do. One (designer accessories) doesn't have anything to do with the other (flirting).

Maybe this was true in 1950? :smile1:

What a load of rubbish.

I buy expensive bags as I like crafted beautifully made things. I carry a bag everyday, so the 'cost per wear' is worth it. I also like under the radar bags, that in the main (outside of fashion circles) no one knows what it is, or how much it cost.

Funny study. Sorry research grants are used for this type of studies. I have to buy my luxury goods myself. In our country, both women and men work. DH and I contribute equally to our bills. If I have money over, I can buy things for myself. Although I would love if DH gave me a new bag, LOL.

Well, at least I now understand why my husband is so into expensive cars; its just his way to signalize to other men to stay away from me, he is mine, he is taken, I love him so much that I even buy him a fancy car.

Wow. First of all, what indiaink said, bull excrement.

Secondly, I work in market research, and these are itty bitty studies, AND anyone who uses Mechanical Turk for what we call "sampling" and "paneling" isn't doing it right.

Thirdly, I am not certain in what circumstance one would assume a woman's nice things were all bought for her by her partner (so offensive), but if I saw that circumstance I WOULD stay away - but not because of any signal of devotion, merely because of a high ick factor!

Strange! I bought most of my designer bags myself, DH gave a few as presents.

Men usually don't care for bags, I buy mainly to please myself! My female friends don't even buy designer bags though I wish they would so there is someone I can talk about bags with.

I know what you mean. None of my friend do either. Good that there is purseforum!!

My laugh of the day!
I have had gifts from men. Expensive gifts that they probably really wanted for themselves. (Like an iPad). I have had men buy me clothing and shoes. (serendipitous thing where you would have a great sale. Not a honey, buy me that moment.) Never bags. Never. Most men don't get it about bags. This thing about how you have this gorgeous thing because of a man---maybe in the 1950s. Maybe you're somebody's "mistress" .....(do they have those anymore?) LOL. Look where they did it: in Minnesota. I am not saying you won't have independent 21st century women there, but the Midwest and South are rather conservative in their outlook. What is the age of some of these respondents? That has a lot to do with it, too!

“We found that a woman who is wearing luxury items and designer brands is perceived to have a more devoted partner and as a result other women are less likely to flirt with him,” “Regardless of who actually purchased the items, other women inferred that the man had something to do with it and is thus more devoted to her.”
Thoughts?
Interesting, thanks for sharing, except that I do not have a boyfriend now so I buy good quality leather bags for myself.
