Am I too old/young to carry that bag?

As an early fortyish (and genuinely looking forward to hitting 5-0), I think fondly of this poem, which for some silly reason never fails to cheer me up (meaning: wear what feels like yourself!):

"When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple."

Jenny Joseph

I think the message is: age and gravitas aren´t always a match... so don´t take yourself (or others) too seriously. Make yourself smile, and they might just smile in turn!

That said, there are a few exceptions where goldies over fifty simply look stunning: croc, fur, and anything exotic or skin.

Great poème, Pimpernel!💙❤️
Thanks for sharing!

I'm early 40's and dress youngish, skinny jeans and boots etc. When I go to the hair salon the young girls always give me an old fashioned bob but the older stylists throw in layers and do it choppy which is how I like it. I think it's the younger generation that maybe assume we want to look older/our age with our style but they are so impressed when they see us wearing something trendy. With bags I see young girls with Chanel and Ferragamo so why not older ladies with young fashion. I would carry any bag that I liked without worrying and I guess the only thing that would put me off would be unpleasant or negative comments from youngsters.

Just give those youngsters a good stare down!
We mature ladies of style have certainly earned the right to wear what we choose!!!
I do draw the line @ Hello Kitty, but that's just me 😄

So I was just looking at switching my purse today and I wondered if I looked too young to carry a certain bag I have (MK Selma w/canvas outside) . So tell me guys, do you consider age when you purchase a bag? Do you think there is a certain style or color that looks weird on you if you are a certain age? And I know most will say screw it if I like a bag I will carry it. But I am just being objective here....opinions?
I used to consider it for certain things, like, when I turned 26 I wondered: "should I still be on the lookout for a mini backpack?" But then MbyMJ came out out with a leather backpack that appeared sleek enough for all ages and I threw caution to the wind. I think it's more about style than age... Despite the market bag designers may target, I've seen women of all ages rock a variety of bags :D

Elaine, love your pink bag! You look fabulous. I can't say as I've ever worried about a bag being too young for me. But maybe I've always been attracted to an "older" style. Or maybe I just don't know the difference LOL. I wouldn't wear a very short skirt or cap sleeves or an outfit that was definitely too young. I'm 59 btw. I don't want to look like "mutton dressed as lamb" as my grandmother would have said. Accessories I tend not to worry about though.

Funny you should both mention pink bags, as I just invested in one! It's a Mulberry Small Willow, and I would ordinarily buy a bag like this in Taupe, or Oak, or perhaps even Red (one can never have too many red bags!). But last November I got it into my head that I simply had to add a "hot pink" bag to my collection. I looked at many pink bags, and decided that if I was going to pull it off, the bag style had to be classic. Thus, a Mulberry.

I think that as long as the rest of the outfit is age-appropriate (no miniskirts! no sleeveless tank tops!:p) a pink bag is a nice pop of color... no matter one's age. (I'm 67.)

Looks great!!! Beautiful bag for a beautiful lady!

You look amazing with this bag! I smiled just by looking at your smile! Enjoy!

What a perfectly splendid bag, Elaine! That shade of pink is perfect for you. The same bag in Taupe or Oak wouldn't nearly compliment the twinkle in your eye or your mischievous smile as well as your Pink Willow!

:happydance: :happydance:

I agree! ... You go Elaine!

Thank you ksadowski, Fimpagebag, Katiesmama, westvillage, and Coach Lover!

Katiesmama, "mutton dressed as lamb" is an expression I use all the time! When I see some of the actresses at the Academy Awards who are... um... of a certain age, and they're wearing sleeveless dresses, or showing a ton of cleavage, I wonder if they own a mirror. :giggles: Then I see other older actresses and they look so stunning and sophisticated, with 3/4-length sleeves, and a sleek silhouette, wearing a dress that is perhaps high in the front but dipped down in the back, and it is just a pleasure to see that one can be older without sacrificing style.

But that's clothes, of course... not bags. As for me, I give myself more leeway when it comes to bags... though I'd feel silly carrying Hello Kitty or some of the "young" MbMJ current designs, and backpacks hurt my shoulder.:p Also, The Hubster bought me a Kate Spade mini-bag a couple of years ago... it has a bow on the front, and it's pale pink. I wore it once, and felt pretty silly. Really, it's for a twenty-something; it doesn't fit my style at all. I'm doing a major bag purge this Spring, and asked him if he'd mind if I divested myself of the KS. Fortunately, he wasn't insulted. ;)

Welcome!
I like to look as put together as possible when I go out.
While Hello Kitty is off the table, I do admit to wearing the Mickey hat at Disney.
But only in the parks. 😃

I have a speedy mini hl and I'm 43 , really loving mini bags I also have a milla clutch and a bamboo handle gucci , I did wonder if the hl is more a 20 something bag but it's cute I love it so don't care. People always stare at me because what I wear is unusual and cultural so now they can stare at my bag too lol

Ha ha thanks Murphy47 I'm going to go practice right now :lawl:

I agree. I'm 41, and I was offended when an SA at Wet Seal pointed me to Wet Seal+ because I was older. Hello?! I wanted that t-shirt with the old school rappers on it because they were new when I was a teenager when rap was in its beginnings. I felt nostalgic and wanted one. Those rappers are my age and older now. Too bad for them because I went to Forever 21 and found one.

So, again, I say wear what you want no matter your age.

I hear ya!
I can now afford all the things I didn't have as a young person.
If I want to bug my kids I threaten to show up at school wearing ALL of them. With poofy hair. Puts their attitude right back in line.
Or I sing.
